Bowie Week In Journal Land

The whole time I've been a member here I've never organised a specific themed week or month.... Until now.

Yesterday saw the release of Bowie's newest triple greatest hits album. To celebrate this I would like to propose that next week anyone with a journal write something on a chosen Bowie album. It can be anything you want. It doesn't have to be a review although you can do that if you wish, you can write something about hearing it for the first time, you can choose an album of his you might not have heard and write something about that, you might want to choose an album you think is underrated or overrated and write something about that.

I won't be including his first album (technically it's a compilation) or including other compilations, bootlegs, live albums, soundtrack albums or unreleased albums on the official list but if you want to continue with the theme yourself it's fine.

Simply name the album you want to cover and you will be added to the list. It will be done on a first come first served basis. We did attempt to do something like this before but it fell apart. I nominated to review 'Lodger' so that'll be my nomination. Only one nomination per person until things slow down, then after that if you want to do another you can if there are still some up.

1969 - David Bowie / Space Oddity
1970 - The Man Who Sold the World
1971 - Hunky Dory (Briks)
1972 - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (Pet_Sounds)
1973 - Aladdin Sane (Chula Vista)
1973 - Pin Ups
1974 - Diamond Dogs (Goofle)
1975 - Young Americans (ladyislingering)
1976 - Station to Station (Neapolitan)
1977 - Low
1977 - Heroes (WhateverDude)
1979 - Lodger (Urban Hat€monger)
1980 - Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) (Trollheart)
1983 - Let's Dance (Plankton)
1984 - Tonight
1987 - Never Let Me Down
1993 - Black Tie White Noise
1995 - 1.Outside (Josef K)
1997 - Earthling
1999 - Hours...
2002 - Heathen
2003 - Reality (Black Francis)
2013 - The Next Day (James)

Count me in. I've never heard an entire Bowie album, so this is a good opportunity. Might as well go with Ziggy Stardust, it's the one I've heard the most about.

Sure, I'm in. I'll take Hunky Dory.

The Batlord 11-18-2014 08:21 AM

Does he have any albums that the snobs hate, but still listen to when nobody else is around?

ladyislingering 11-18-2014 08:32 AM

I'll do "Young Americans"!

Very cool idea.

Plankton 11-18-2014 08:42 AM

I'll take the SRV laden "Let's Dance".

Chula Vista 11-18-2014 10:33 AM

I'll do Aladdin Sane.

James 11-18-2014 10:38 AM

I'll do something about his recent work, The Next Day and his new single.

Let's Dance, but it's sadly taken.

Pet_Sounds 11-18-2014 03:15 PM

Just listened to Ziggy Stardust, and I'm hooked. Thanks Urban! :D

Neapolitan 11-18-2014 04:31 PM

I'll take Station to Station

edit: If anyone is doing greatest hits, I would like to do Changesonebowie.

Trollheart 11-18-2014 05:50 PM

Dammit! So busy writing about Floyd and Springsteen I missed this. Wanted "Station to station" but the Neapster has beaten me to it, so I'll have some scary monsters please.

Goofle 11-18-2014 06:08 PM

That'll be me, sir.

Frownland 11-18-2014 06:27 PM

I'll do The Prestige.

What? it's not a bad album..

The Batlord 11-18-2014 10:39 PM

Just read your post in a literal sense, without thinking about albums.

Trollheart 11-19-2014 05:03 AM

Yeah, who needs reality? Fantasy is much better! :)

Josef K 11-19-2014 12:44 PM

I'll take Outside, I guess. If nobody takes it I'll try to do The Man Who Sold the World also.

Thelonious Monkey 11-19-2014 12:59 PM

Oh god, I'm out sorry. I know I am not going to like this when I sampled it, and this will definitely bore me. Sorry again. Somebody else can take Low.

Why not say why you don't like it, not everything has to be positive.

That would require me to listen to it. And I gave a couple of tracks a go, and I really don't want to. If I do, I will only be forcing myself, just to do a review, and it will put me off listening to music for a while.

I have to admit I don't understand this. I listened to "Low" ages ago and I was really impressed, and everyone knows what a girl I am! But over the last month I've kind of forced myself to listen to a lot of music I would normally not even touch, and in some but not all cases I've been impressed. However, even when I truly hated the album I was still glad I tried it, because it means I wasn't pre-judging it, which seems to be what you're doing here.

The only way you grow musically is to listen to stuff that's not normally your bag. Not saying you have to force yourself to listen to it, but it's a bit of a cop-out to just decide to give up. I can't see anything so bad about the album that it would put you off music. What's specifically so terrible to you about it?

Trollheart 11-19-2014 01:38 PM

Urb, can you update the list? I'm not there yet and it looks like "Scary monsters" is still up for grabs. And it ain't. You wanna fight about it? ;)

Okay, your right, I shouldn't pre-judge it. I have always gone by that. Then I tried Psych, and unfortunately, I now dislike that genre. So I am now in a phase where I just don't want to listen to anything new. This will only make me want to go listen to the same stuff I have become accustomed too. Also count the fact that I would have to do a review of some form. In fact, I am not seriously saying I wouldn't give it a go, but I am just not in the mood anymore. I am sure it will pass. If I am to listen to it and review it, I am going to want to do it in my own time. Not somebody else's schedule. I want to enjoy the music, and not do it for the sake of it. Plus were not all like you Trollheart. Everybody has their limits, and forcing yourself, for some people, is not healthy when listening to music. Whether they pre-judge it or not. Although sorry for pissing you people about. I get ahead of myself, when I know I should slow down. Like I said, I will listen to it, but only when I want. Which might be a while. So it would be easer if somebody else did it instead. Because I sure as hell ain't rushing. And sorry again Urban for even attempting to be a part of this.

Well I guess that's a fair point. I just checked out of the Psych AC myself because a) the albums were coming too fast and b) I really didn't like much of what I was listening to. No point in forcing yourself. But try to give "Low" a listen at some point; you might be surprised.

Sorry if I came over all preachy: it's the Metal Month II Trollheart. He just won't **** off and let me go back to the way I was. He won't let me live... :banghead:

Dr. Heart and Mr. Troll…

Black Francis 11-19-2014 06:49 PM

I get your reasoning Justine, if you're not up to it don't do it this is a voluntary event but i think Trollheart made some good points about how stepping out your comfort zone could benefit your musical growth.

For the longest time i was stuck in a 90's music bubble and knew little outside of it but now im trying to be open minded about other types of music.

except dubstep, i will never get into dubstep.

Dibs on Scary Monsters

GuD 11-19-2014 09:05 PM

I've been meaning to start a journal for a while and wouldn't mind kicking it off with a little snippet about Heroes. I'm in.

I'm assuming you're making a joke there, Triple WP? If not, then hands off: not only is Scary Monsters mine, I've already completed my review. :ar_15s:

Trollheart 11-20-2014 11:10 AM

Also, Urban: are we getting some sort of banner or is there some heading we should be using? Or do we just refer to it being Bowie week?

Thelonious Monkey 11-20-2014 11:16 AM

You going to remove my name of the list? Somebody might want Low.
