Yeah I mean it would be a shame because going some place else would mean losing all the history of this place. I have 7k+ post here spanning more than 16 years. This is why I'm still here. I get a kick out of rummaging through old threads or running into some of my old posts or older discussions between people I know/knew.

It would be interesting to understand how much money they're actually making here. I know they own a bigger forum with more advanced software (or at least more features), so if they already have the license for it, would it cost much more to do some upgrades here?

Or maybe they'd be willing to sell it. But how much could it cost, including making upgrades? Anyone have any idea?

With owners seemingly uninterested, chances are it's all gonna disappear one day in any case. Newer BBpress versions may have made many changes to database architecture over the years and so at this point, even upgrading the site may break things completely if you don't do it smart and stepwise.

It would be nice if they can accomplish that, but with no word from them, who knows if they even want to?

Edit:

The sites / domains I've run has been 30-40 USD per year, but I guess you may have to pay more for increased traffic / capacity.

I'd be down with moving but it's risky. How many people would be interested, would you be able to lift the forum off the ground and have other people come in etc...dunno.

I sympathise with the idea, and it's good to have you back Tore! Another forum legend I finally get to meet.

Also throwback to the time Mord/Zantheimi tried to make a rogue MB and essentially did a failed coup lol

Could be hard. I don't know. I would suggest leaving some stickes/notifications pointing members to the new boards and then wait for activity to shift to the new place.

I think I'd just do it quietly without alerting advameg to the fact.

Yes, free forums like that might be a way to go. They're filled with ads, though.

Nice to meet you too, Marie

The same thing you're describing happened in the rap forum I used to be on before here. Most of the key members left to another domain and the original one died off. The new one is still only a shell of what the original once was. It's dwindling in activity as it relies not or less exclusively on the people who fled the old board. New members don't sign up.

Dunno if that's what would happen here

I can't believe people actually make money off this ****. I'm jealous.

Yeah, that's definitely a risk.

Another course of action could be to try to pressure advameg into doing something. The mods could go on a strike.

One of the reasons I left so many years ago was basically the points brought up in the first post here. I had made several requests to owners/Yac that they do stuff like update forum software. I'm pretty sure I even offered to do it for them for free, although I did realize it was unlikely they'd give me the logins. Anyways, I did my share of crying about this but was told that the meager profits MB generated meant that updates etc. didn't make sense from a cost perspective. Also, they were afraid of unintentionally breaking things.

It pissed me off because what they're basically doing is exploiting the community, us fine guys and gals. We generate the content that will show up in google searches or otherwise pull people in and generate ad-clicks that doesn't just come from bots. I didn't think a BBPress update was too much to ask. In a way, if you care too much about MB in its current state, you'll suffer for that. It's sad how they run it that way.

The logical conclusion to the problem for me at that time was an organized exodus from musicbanter. It's easy peasy. Give me or someone else here who's a little tech savvy half an hour or two and we'll have musicbanter 2.0 up and running on a new domain. Possibly a patreon or something similar could be set up to cover costs, although it can be done quite cheap (hosting isn't that expensive and there's lots of free forum software). People could bring over the content they wanted to preserve.

I suggested this emphatically, but the idea didn't catch. Maybe some saw it as mutiny, although I feel that loyalty to the community could align well with a migration to someplace else. Staying here is loyalty to advameg and what have they done the last X years to deserve it?

So that has a lot to do with why I left in the first place. Coming back, I see the same old BBPress and I guess we're all lucky it's still browser compatible. Still, it's been nice being back. While I still think the community here SHOULD migrate to something else, I won't bring it up again unless it's on topic

It would probably be a good idea to set up a kind of contingency forum, if it were possible to move most of the content from here to there in the event of this one biting the big one. I'm not entirely sure I could stand to see the likes of The Playlist of Life go back to single-figure views, mind you!

So, a backup forum?
