Spiderland - Slint

In my opinion, the equal first best album to come out of the 90's along with Wowee Zowee by Pavement.

Do you love it? are you apathetic to it? do you hate it? The only reason I can think for someone hating it is because in their rush to get it because it is one of the greatest albums ever, a loved on crashed their car and killed themselves.

Jellybones 12-23-2005 01:18 PM

i've listened to it a few times, but i dont see anything special in it...i keep hearing its a great album, but i dont see much out of it. maybe i'll listen to it a few more times and see something i really like about it

IndiElectronica 12-28-2005 10:45 AM

i'll go with amazing - but found this too late to be of much importance to me musically.

cardboard adolescent 12-30-2005 07:42 PM

I love this album. I listened to Tweez before I got it, so I already liked Slint, but when I listened to this it blew me away - the melodies, time signatures, incredible tension building, the whole thing is a sustained aural orgasm.

It feels like an incredibly short album, but each of the six tracks is over five minutes - not many bands can hold my attention that well for eight minutes like Slint does on Washer.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-30-2005 08:23 PM

I don`t really rate it to be honest , but you can`t really deny it`s influence.

cardboard adolescent 06-18-2006 10:36 PM

Live Slint set from France

No need to thank me. Anyone on this forum who still hasn't heard Slint really needs to. I guess that's a fine place to start.

swim 12-06-2006 07:05 PM

Spiderland is pretty damn awesome. It's perfectly written and not anything short of classic.

tdoc210 12-06-2006 07:30 PM

may i have an upload please

Merkaba 12-06-2006 09:36 PM

Fantastic album. There are a couple of tracks I don't get into as much, but the general sound of the album is great. The last track is my favourite.

White Lies 12-07-2006 06:03 AM

The end of Good Morning Captain, where he screams "I miss you", is THE best and most emotional ending to a song I've heard. The way it builds up to it is special, it's such a chilling song.

I really love this album, although For Dinner kinda bores me. But the rest is so good I'd still give it 5/5. I love the way the vocal can alterate from like quiet hushed spoken word to frantic shouting. I need to hear Tweez soon!

It's an amazingly atmospheric album.

Woah, how about I just get you to write my posts for me, thats pretty much exactly my thoughts on the album too, especially what you said about GMC, thats what did it for me too:)

The other thing I really enjoyed was the spoken lyrics. It's not something you hear often but it's so fitting.

If anyone has the other albums, I think theres 2 others? I'd be dead keen to download them.

cardboard adolescent 12-07-2006 04:04 PM

Tweez'll probably let you down after Spiderland, but I'll upload it if I get a chance.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-07-2006 04:10 PM

So am I the only person who thought Tortoise were better than Slint :o:

cardboard adolescent 12-07-2006 06:35 PM

Yes. In the entire universe.

White Lies 12-09-2006 02:22 PM

*checks out Tortoise*

has anyone heard Squirrel Bait? They were a sorta post-hardcore band, the original band of 3 Slint members. Pretty good if youre into that stuff.

cardboard adolescent 12-09-2006 02:44 PM

Squirrel Bait are pretty good, not as good as I had hoped, but decent.

Frewen 01-11-2008 03:09 AM

Apologies for the mega-bump, but I'd like to reiterate the essential nature of this album for any rock fan.

And also to thank cardboard adolescent for the link to that live set.

Mr Sensitive 01-11-2008 05:58 AM

Ah I do love this album.

jackhammer 01-11-2008 12:40 PM

I still can't find the damn thing.

Kevorkian Logic 01-11-2008 05:55 PM

like hard copy?

Farfisa 01-04-2009 05:34 PM

I love this album, it's just too great for words. I don't care for the song Washer though.

Sneer 01-05-2009 07:39 PM

THE post-rock album, Hex comes close but this is near enough perfect. The quiet-loud dynamic is especially powerful, the time signatures are another highlight. The general flow of the tracks just makes it such an easy, enjoyable listen.

washer is an incredible song

best tracks:

1. Good Morning Captain
2. Breadcrumb Trail
3. Washer
4. DOn Amon (or however you spell it, incredible lyrics to htis one)
5. Nosferatu Man
6. For Dinner

nothing against For Dinner, it's a great little break in the album. The whole thing is awesome.

Malicious Wakizashi 01-20-2009 10:21 PM

Nosferatu Man would be higher on my list but more or less the same

Piss Me Off 01-21-2009 05:06 AM

Washer is me fave, closely followed by Nosferatu Man.

Yeah don't get me wrong, Nosferatu Man is an incredible song...so hard to pick for me though.

Davey Moore 02-28-2009 06:46 PM

Hell yeah Spiderland.

Malicious Wakizashi 02-28-2009 10:39 PM

Yeah Tweez is pretty good too.

Molecules 03-06-2009 02:26 PM

I never got round to this, although the song 'Good Morning Captain' is a good momentum-builder. Am I missing out? I mean really?

Farfisa 03-06-2009 02:30 PM

Yes, you are definately missing out. If you need it then just pm me.

Alfred 03-06-2009 02:38 PM

If you like a bunch of weird talking over some random bleak music, then go for it. :thumb:

Naw, I joke.

I listened to it again today, and it didn't bore me like it did the first time... but it still didn't do it for me. :(

"Good Morning, Captain" has one of the best build ups and I never get tired of it. Wait, you're the one that prefers "Tweez" to "Spiderland" aren't you?

Alfred 03-06-2009 10:23 PM

I have'nt heard Tweez.

Oh well, it's alot heavier than "Spiderland". You might like it though.

Roygbiv 03-06-2009 11:03 PM

Spiderland is a huge commitment. You have to listen to it from beginning to end to get it, because the album climaxes. It's bleak, it's dark, but it's also cathartic. It's not a casual listen at all - you have to devote every second of your attention to it, otherwise you'll yawn and give up way too early.
