Oh good, i need some help here anyways:

I don't know anything about post-rock but never shy, I bought an explosions in the sky CD. I was going to buy the CD with the angle on the cover because the art was great, but apparently thats their "mediocre" album. So I was told to get some white one with writing all over it, but the clerk said it was their softer one, so I ended up buying "All of a sudden" and have yet to listen to it.

Long story short: Is "All of a Sudden" worth the listen, or should I have picked up something else?

Edit: I listened to esmerine on the back of Six's recommendation and having heard that I'm wondering what the qualifications were for Post-rock?

And do the two Buckethead gem's "Electric Tears" and "Colma" count as post-rock albums?

I think their great, try White Wash, Ghost (both from Colma) or "Sketches of Spain (for Miles)," or "Mantaray" (both from tears)

ahem. from Wikipedia:

"Post-rock is a music genre characterized by non-traditional use of rock instruments and high musical density. Although firmly rooted in the indie scene, post-rock's style bears little resemblance musically to that of indie rock. However, as post-rock music is often recorded on independent labels, indie and post-rock often share the same level of obscurity."

"As mentioned above, the post-rock sound incorporates a wide variety of musical genres, such as ambient, jazz, electronica, experimental, and sometimes even rock. The post-rock approach to music, such as the emphasis on instrumental work and sonic texture, is similar to the earlier New Age movement, which came out of the modern folk tradition. Post-rock is characterized by repetition of musical motifs and subtle changes, with an extremely wide range of dynamics. Most often, post-rock songs are lengthy and instrumental, containing repetitive build-ups of timbre, dynamics and texture. Guitar timbres are usually smooth. 3rd bridge guitars like the Fender Jaguar and the Jazzmaster in combination with delay and reverb are popular equipment. Harmonically, there is an emphasis on consonance, though by no means is there a definitive rule of thumb."

for further information, consult Post-rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. i don't know why people can't run a simple search themselves...

You have a great taste in post-rock Ethan. On my computer I have post rock and post metal in the same folder because I feel they're both so atmospheric that genre-tags are no boundary; i.e. many post rock bands can be as heavy as many metal bands. So I've added a post-metal list, even if I don't know as much about it.

Anyway, Isis is the best post rock/metal band IMO - unmatched genius and one of my favourite bands ever. They're one of those very rare bands that have changed the way I think about music... you know, you get bands like that which shake your musical foundations. I've found about 5 in my life.

Post-Rock:
Jakob - Excellent NZ post rock, check out Solace (seen them 3 times this year)... definitely my fav post-rock band.
Caspian - Should probably start with You Are the Conductor
Mono - of course!
Sparrows, Swarm and Sing
Red Sparowes
Sickoakes
Russian Circles
Pirate Ship Quintet
Maserati
Yndi Halda
Lanterna - a bit repetitive, but nice and dreamy
Ellis the Vacuumchild
Votiva Lux
The Evpatoria Report

Post-Metal:
Isis - Oceanic/Panopticon
Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats...
Neurosis - The Eye of Every Storm
Mare

Esmerine
As the Poets Affirm
Bright Red Paper

string oriented post-rock. quite good

but honestly, pr is the new indie rock. scene is oversaturated; hipsters have gotten ahold of it. prepare to watch it crash and burn

i have getting more and more into post rock recently and thought I would suggest some bands apart from the usual suspects that I have been listening to recently.

The sleeve for Faust's s/t says that they are a "legendary German post-rock band." Allmusic informs me that Talk Talk's Laughing Stock is the first post-rock album, or maybe Spiderland. So has post-rock been around since the 70's or the 90's? Or is it a phenomenon of this decade? I think it's one of the most frustrating and absurd genre tags I have to deal with on a regular basis. In any case a lot of the 90's bands tagged as post-rock get a lot of love from me, but a lot of the stuff from the last few years sounds pretty same-y to me. Still good to listen to every once in a while.

sleepy jack 11-27-2007 10:38 PM

A Silver Mt. Zion is becoming one of my favorite bands ever. Everyone should get into Horses in the Sky, better than anything Godspeed did.

I was always led to believe that the term was first used by a writer who wanted a clever way of describing Stereolab's music. Obviously Stereolab are not considered a post rock band but then there was no established genre in 91 or 92 when it was written to compare it with , just a name someone used to describe it.

The genre tag has been around for a long time, but as a generally defined sound it has been gaining a lot more exposure. As for Talk Talk, Spirit Of Eden was a couple of years earlier than Laughing Stock and could just as easily be classed as post rock. In fact there are a couple of tracks from The Colour of Spring (April 5th and Chameleon Day) that sit proudly in this tag which are even earlier (86). I am a big TALK TALK fan. Mark Hollis's forever gestating debut is a sublime album too.

I'm making a list that will hopefully reach 50, maybe 100 (I doubt it) of my top post-rock, they'll be a bunch of ambient albums and albums that are just sort of post-rockin' thrown in. It isn't really strictly post-rock but fans should like it just the same.

sleepy jack 12-07-2007 09:14 PM

After I wrap up the Crowquill 100 i'm going to post this list as well as say a few things about the album. It won't be anywhere near as extensive as the Crowquill 100 (i'm not going to do album covers) and probably just be one giant post maybe two. I may get a bit more in-depth on the top 10 albums, but yeah the list is a good length. I'll finish it up in about a week.

mannequin Republic 12-08-2007 02:22 AM

I'm kind of a post-rock virgin. I've never been able to get into godspeed, sigur ros, etc. I did however, stumble upon Milgram's Another One Buys the Dust, and I must say this album is quite stellar. Anyone want to recommend me anything along the lines of it for just getting into the genre (aka assume I haven't heard it, regardless if it's a flagship).

pheurton 12-08-2007 11:12 AM

As the poets affirm <3

Their earlier stuff is better, check out I Want To Tell My Heart To You But I Cannot Say English

Kevorkian Logic 12-08-2007 12:09 PM

If you want to go obvious I would say listen to Tortoise, or at least their early cds, i'm quite fond of those. I like Kinski a fair amount as well, i'm unsure if they're known or not.

Tortoise and UI represent the funky side of post-rock, which is why they rock.
