Do they? I prefer the more ambient side like Anoice TBH.

cardboard adolescent 12-08-2007 12:36 PM

Tortoise is all over the place, but UI always lock into a stellar groove because they have the double bass thing going on.

sleepy jack 12-08-2007 01:54 PM

For Tortoise i'd get Millions Now Living Will Never Die, it's generally held as their best and I personally think there's a reason for it.

jonvech 12-08-2007 05:00 PM

I just saw Explosions in the Sky open up for the Pumpkins recently in philly. They were very very good. I can't say i listen to them too much but if they were on I definitly would NOT turn them off. Sigur Ros is probably my favorite Post-rock band at the moment. I didn't realize there existed post-rock before the 90's but after reading this thread I am enlightened. I have heard of Talk Talk and Slint however. Never sought out to listen to them though. Don't know why. Spirit of Eden and Spiderland eh? Will probably have to check those out.

Kevorkian Logic 12-08-2007 05:42 PM

You should, there are much better bands out there than Sigur Ros, no lie.

Just not many.

You know I don't mention this album enough but Copia by Eluvium really is a beautiful release and more people should listen to it. I'd check that one out jackhammer, it's going in the post rock top 10.

That is a really good album. I guess I just considered it more of a electronica/ambient type album. Will have to give it another go around.

I brought Kinski Newest cd after telling the boy at the cd store to pick me any cd

It blew my mind

Seltzer 12-20-2007 02:43 PM

This is basically copying my post from the other post-rock thread.

For post-rock I'd especially recommend Jakob - Solace, Caspian - You Are the Conductor and Mono - You Are There. That Mono album is especially beautiful - their earlier stuff is good too, but of a slightly different style.

For post-metal Isis, Neurosis and Pelican are pretty much all very good. I haven't explored post-metal as much as post-rock. Those ones may take a bit more listening to get used to.

Isis is my favourite band in all post rock/metal.

Post-Rock:
Jakob - Excellent NZ post rock, check out Solace (seen them 3 times this year)... definitely my fav post-rock band.
Caspian - Should probably start with You Are the Conductor
Mono - of course!
Sparrows, Swarm and Sing
Red Sparowes
Sickoakes
Russian Circles
Pirate Ship Quintet
Maserati
Yndi Halda
Lanterna - a bit repetitive, but nice and dreamy
Ellis the Vacuumchild
Votiva Lux
The Evpatoria Report

Post-Metal:
Isis - Oceanic/Panopticon
Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats...
Neurosis - The Eye of Every Storm

Big up to Seltzer for this list.

No problem. But I should mention, that after listening to some more Maserati, I'm not sure if I like it as much, but maybe it'll grow on me.

jackhammer 12-20-2007 06:33 PM

I have heard Neurosis and wasn't blown away TBH.

I think they're great. All of their albums are quite different though - I'd say Eye of the Storm is the most accessible and probably the best. Which one did you hear?

BenJewSex 12-30-2007 01:53 PM

i love all post-rock, but i have never heard anything like godspeed you! black emperor. they're close to flawless, in my mind. dead flag blues is arguably the most amazing piece of music i have ever listened to.

anticipation 12-30-2007 05:19 PM

Kemialliset Ystavat's "Kellari Juniversumi" is really neat.

it's also got a cool name.

sleepy jack 12-30-2007 05:25 PM

I don't really like them, I've never been into that "free folk" crap though. I wouldn't call it post-rock either.

anticipation 12-30-2007 05:30 PM

they're more like post-finnish-psychadelic-folkish-ambience,

i figure it's worth checking out at least.

I added my post-rock mix to the beginning of the thread but I left the original post too because I mentioned some amazing bands, most of which are featured on the comp. I also merged the 32943 post-rock threads we had.

The_Megatron 01-02-2008 11:21 PM

The thread actually delivers. *stamp of approval*

jackhammer 01-06-2008 10:26 AM

I'm listening to GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT. They are from Ireland and I'm suitably impressed. Post rock is possibly my favourite genre at the moment.

Give Jakob - Semaphore a listen here and see if you like it.

Skid Mark 01-10-2008 07:07 PM

That's nuts, I just started listening to God is an Astronaut this morning, great stuff. Also listening to This Will Destroy You's debut album which came out recently

Safe in Numbers off their latest album, Solace is probably one of my favourite tracks ever. Absurdly atmospheric...

And I'm loving TWDY's s/t too. It's a lot more laid back than their YM EP, but it definitely works. The standout track for me is They Move on Tracks of Never-Ending Light, but they're all great ^_^

And browsing through the whole thread, anyone wanting to get into post-rock should check out enemyat_thesix's list, which has some excellent bands on it.

A band that I don't think has yet been mentioned are Mono. If anyone ever wanted to go and see one post-rock band live, they're that band. On record, I find their music has less impact (unless turned up) but is still worth checking out. Their neo-classical collab with World's End Girlfriend is however worth getting; I don't think I've heard a more beautifully depressing record.

sleepy jack 01-11-2008 06:02 PM

I mentioned Mono in the first post...

Frewen 01-12-2008 04:14 AM

Whoops! -pts for observation pour moi :/

Been listening to ambient-styled post-rock along the lines of GIAA recently: Hammock, The American Dollar, Emery Reel etc

Finally got 'round to listening to Joy For Eternity's album; it's not bad at all!

definitely the greatest song on this mix imo

cabangbangq 06-15-2008 05:04 PM

I like the idea of Sigur Ros, but I can't stand the singer, can anyone please reccomend me similar groups?

Stafraenn Hakon is remarkably similar to Sigur Ros but sings in English:

MySpace.com - Stafrænn Hákon - ReykjavÃ*k / Copenhagen, IS - Alternative / Experimental / Ambient - www.myspace.com/shakon

New album Gummi is good but is a virtual carbon copy of Sigur Ros.

Civic Depreciator 06-16-2008 10:08 PM

Where's the appreciation for Jessamine, Labradford, Laika, Main, Jim O'Rourke, and Ui. Somehow, some of my favorite post-rock/experimental bands were left off. Nonetheless, some great bands have already been mentioned.

They have extremely eerie videos. Can depress anyone. Good band though.

Demonoid 06-17-2008 11:47 PM

No one mentioned russian circles or cult of luna yet?!
Check out Russian circles - Enter & Cult Of Luna - Somewhere Along the Highway, The Beyond, Eternal Kingdom(Their 2008 release).
All are excellent albums.

Nice thread though...discovered quite a few lesser known post-rock bands.

jackhammer 06-18-2008 03:39 PM

Some of my favourite Post Rock albums:

Pan American-360 Business 360 Bypass
Mark Hollis- S.T
Anoice-Remmings
Tijuana Mon Amour Broadcasting Inc-Cold Jubilee (of the snowqueen)
Kayo Dot-Dowsing Anemone With Copper tongue
September Collective-All The Birds Were Anarchists
Pg.Lost-Yes I Am
God Is An Astronaut-A Moment Of Stillness
Mogwai-Zidane A 21st Century Portrait
Explosions In The Sky-How Strange, Innocence
Do Make Say Think-Besides

Boskov 07-23-2008 12:45 PM

Is Kayo Dot really post rock? I know they have some Post Rock Tendencies, mainly in Choirs of the Eye, but not enough to warrant a Post Rock tag.

I generally just put them in the "amazing" genre, anyways.

Piss Me Off 07-23-2008 01:29 PM

Just had my first taste of 65daystostatic, goood shizz. Soaring emotional instrumentals with that hard edge to them, i'm impressed.

It's the easiest bracket to put them into. You could easily replace that with Film Soundtracks as a lot of post rock uses the same deconstructionial soundscapes prevalent on many soundtracks. I personally cannot stand the term 'Post Rock' and would much prefer to use something like 'Ambient Rock' but the tag has already stuck!

While I dislike pidgeonholing, I really can't think of a better suited name than post-rock for some bands. But yes, it is a rather bizarre term that has spawned a plethora of rediculous subgenres that borders on tedium.

Post Progressive?

If that makes you feel happier then go for it! I still much prefer 'Ambient' which is what it exactly is. Maybe the terms 'Ambient' and 'Rock' are so diameterically opposed that people are afraid to use them together. It is usually music that you chill out to that is played within a traditional rock set up!

cardboard adolescent 07-23-2008 05:38 PM

Post Progressive pretty much sums up the entire current music scene.
