It has elements of post-rock, folk, psychedelia, indie rock, etc. I personally didn't like it too much, but don't let that dissuade you from listening to it (I know more people who like it than do not).

Sweet Jane 04-23-2011 08:11 AM

I like Feels, but you need to decide for yourself. Everyone's different.

I saw them just before Merriwhether came out and I thought they were great. Although they played in a very small venue, dunno how they translate into an open air setting. :\ I'm seeing them again next month, totally psyched...(:

Well now. Sorry to say that I've been to the gig last night and can confirm their ultimate suckage. I can safely say this was the worst gig of a band I listen to and love I've ever been to. I walked out in the middle of the encore. Could've walked out halfway through the gig, I was so bored and unineterested in the things they were doing.

They played literally 2 or 3 songs I knew and managed to completely destroy them. There was absolutely no flow to the gig, every time a song ended I had a feeling they were doing a sound check with some lame background music. The new material is godawful and Panda Bear (which for me was the pop anchor of the group) was practically invisible. Naturally and sadly, he didn't play anything from Tomboy.

Utter destruction of sound, complete violation of everything that made them a great pop band.

I blame the return of Deakin.

I wish I could've been there... I probably would have enjoyed it. However, I am really sorry that it was a letdown for you. How much did you end up spending on the tickets?

Farfisa 05-25-2011 09:57 AM

What, did they go back to their experimental routes?

Good.

I was interested to read of your disappointment with their recent live performance.

I only just learned of Animal Collective this month and so far like the sunny, happy, shimmering, meditative full sound of the two songs of theirs that I've heard: "Bees" and "My Girls."

Now I'm listening to parts of more of their songs so that hopefully I can learn how their sound has changed over time. Luckily I probably won't ever hear them live, so I'll never have to face a letdown like you did, adidasss! :)

Animal Collective - "My Girls"

wavverton 05-30-2011 02:03 PM

Animal collective is great, can not wait to see em at pitchfork

Farfisa 05-31-2011 10:12 AM

I like it when no one answers my question. Did they go back to doing this kind of stuff?

adidasss 05-31-2011 11:06 AM

Sorry, I thought you answered your own question.

Uhm, no, the new stuff is not as bad as that.

Yeah, that was my fault. I should have said "Then that's good if they did".

Surell 06-21-2011 11:23 AM

What is pop Animal Collective? Is Strawberry Jam in that category? I figured Merriwether would be, it has a poppier sound generally, but Strawberry Jam has more edge to it for me. Still, i can see it's not as experimental as earlier material (which i need to get), but i'm not good with pop so i wouldn't call it a pop album. Wrong?

TheRealHimself 06-22-2011 04:11 AM

It's just Animal Collective. I don't really know if you can categorize their sound to be honest.

Surell 06-22-2011 12:23 PM

Well I've heard some people equate some of their sound (vocalization and general feel of Merriwether) to Beach Boys, while my mom thinks both Merriwether and Strawberry Jam sounds like early Pink Floyd. I can see both comparisons as true in some aspects but i also agree that their sound is unique based on my own limited experience.

Surell 07-20-2011 11:25 AM

You guys must be Crazy.

I just saw Animal Collective live and it was one of The best shows i've ever seen. I could only put it behind Dinosaur Jr. and that's for personal reasons. They were all into it, their stage setup was amazing, and their sound was perfect. I only knew two songs but I liked most of their new material better anyway. And no, their new material is not on the experimental level of Here Comes the Indian, but doesn't have the poppiness of Merriwether. To me, it's like going back to Strawberry Jam but better. And so far that's my favorite album.

adidasss 07-20-2011 01:46 PM

Yeah well, I'm an unabashed pop-whore and the primary reason I like/listen to them is for the poppiness.

And what exactly was amazing about their stage setup?

Surell 07-21-2011 12:06 PM

Did they use the SpaceCave thing at the show you went to? When my ladyfriend gets the pictures off of her camera, i'll post one to show you what i mean. I thought it was a cool concept and a really trippy sight to see.

TheRealHimself 07-29-2011 06:33 AM

No matter how many times I try, I just cannot get through their Feels album :(

Zyrada 07-29-2011 10:03 AM

I have a harder time digesting what they made the earlier in their discography I go. I know it was less accessible before and all, and I'm not one to shy away from experimentalism, but the earlier Animal Collective is just not my cup of tea. My own cut-off point is pre-Sung Tongs.

DevonWilliams 09-13-2011 05:22 PM

This is amazing

James 01-19-2012 03:11 PM

Been craving a new album and finally it comes! Have to wait to November though, FML.

Surell 01-19-2012 05:31 PM

NEW ALBUM? AAAAAAAAAAAAHKEHSKSHSRKHHHRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH

I''ve been waiting too. Finally heard Fall Be Kind (or most of it) and it's pretty hot, but the stuff they played live left me huuuuungggrrrryyyyy.

debaserr 01-19-2012 05:42 PM

I hope they keep evolving, I'm not a massive fan of their more recent work.

Surell 01-19-2012 07:02 PM

They definitely are, but how recent do you mean? outtacuriousity

debaserr 01-19-2012 08:19 PM

Everything done by them (including side deals) since Person Pitch I could do without. I listen to MPP every once in a while though.

Surell 01-19-2012 08:22 PM

I'd take Strawberry Jam > MPP myself, if that's what you're implying. But I do listen to Merriwether when i wanna get down dirty.

Alfred 01-19-2012 09:33 PM

Feels is my favorite album from them, but Merriweather is an amazing pop album.

debaserr 01-19-2012 10:32 PM

It's good but it really wears on me, I can hear it about once every 6 months or so.

RVCA 01-19-2012 11:34 PM

I agree. I think Strawberry Jam is their strongest work-- love the shrieking he does

James 01-20-2012 01:18 AM

Strawberry Jam would be my personal favourite too. Their latest EP was a bit crap, but I blame that on the fact it was them all working solo on it. They're still my favourite band at the moment so I still have high hopes. New album is gonna be called Bells.

Goofle 01-20-2012 03:10 AM

Yep, Strawberry Jam for me too.

Farfisa 01-20-2012 10:03 PM

Where's the love for the early stuff?

This was before they settled on the name "Animal Collective". Man, that's some magic.

Goofle 01-21-2012 11:46 AM

^ Awful.

DoctorSoft 01-21-2012 01:09 PM

Goddamn this song is a jammer.

Surell 01-21-2012 07:07 PM

I love Alvin Row from the first album (Spirit They're Gone), but i don't get much outside of that. Sung Tongs is pretty good too but i can never get in the mood for it; same with Her Comes the Indian.

James 01-22-2012 10:37 AM

I adore all of their stuff don't get me wrong. All their albums seem to contrast with eachother perfectly. Great discography.

Violent & Funky 01-22-2012 09:11 PM

What's with all the "bells" in indie music lately?

animolover 01-25-2012 04:29 PM

Hey folks, I made a little video for Brother Sport using some cool footage from BBC's Frozen Planet documentary series. It is my first attempt at video editing, I really hope I have done justice with this vid for the overall feel of the music. :)

It's over at vimeo. Just search "Brother Sport Frozen Planet" It's also the first thing which pops up on google.

I don't pretend to have made any of a footage myself, just 9 hours work of editing. Released as a homage to two of my favourite things - Frozen Planet and Animal Collective.

Hope ya like!

An obsession with Sylvia Plath? I dunno, i never noticed. When did AC commit this?

Alfred 01-25-2012 06:11 PM

Pretty sure they haven't.
