I listened to F♯ A♯ ∞ (vinyl version) and 'Like Antennas' and they both were fascinating listens. I've never really heard anything like it before. I definitely see the comparisons between film and tv scores (at points, at least) mentioned way early in the thread. I feel like they try and tell a story through sounds, or something like that. I wasn't really able to pick up on what that story was, but it was still very cool!

On the other hand, it was a bit tiring to listen to multiple songs in a row. Very long pieces, and it was easy to lose focus on the song during the down parts. I know it's part of the pacing to incite atmosphere but that doesn't really help keep me interested. So while I'm interested I also feel like it's not totally accessible to me. I'll give some more listening time to them, though, since my interest outweighs the problems I have.

This was my problem with Godspeed when I first listened to them also. I kept listening to them though and it all just clicked one day. They're band of patience.

Listen to the CD version of F#A# (infinity). It has some movements that are not present on the vinyl version that are absolutely jaw-dropping.

Yeah, that much is obvious. I think the key to me getting the most out of my listening time with them is that I need to be in a specific mood. I'm just not exactly sure what mood that is...

I wasn't sure if I should bother with the CD version, but sure I'll give it a shot.

I've heard a few songs by them. They were kinda slow and chilled for a prog metal band. Other than that fans I know seem to boast about them a lot. Meh, dunno weather they're worth looking to or not.

Prog metal?

Rjinn 10-28-2012 05:08 PM

Sorry just looked into them, that's only what I heard. Assumed they were since they're in the "metal" category genre in stores.

Nah. It's heavy music for sure, but not in the same way that metal is. These guys would fall under the 'post-rock' category, though unfortunately there's no such section at HMV and the like.

This album is incredible.

So, what did everyone think of their new album?

Sequoioideae 10-16-2013 07:08 PM

I'm seeing them GY!BE in a few days, I'm not much of a fan though *gasp*. What should I expect, and should my head by mounted on a stake for not actually being a fan and going anyway?

DeadChannel 12-09-2014 11:32 PM

So, I know I've already bumped a few things in this section tonight, but this is maybe my favourite band.

F# A# infinity is their best album imo, say what you will about skinny fists.

Alfred 12-09-2014 11:47 PM

responding to old posts because I like this band

It was great and worthy of the GY!BE name. Not as good as their two masterpieces (F#A# and LYSF) but superior to the EP and Yanqui. In my opinion, it has the most raw energy of any Godspeed album and actually feels vital and alive, which is something I can't say about most post-rock albums. So in terms of recording and production, it's better than any other Godspeed album. Doesn't quite reach the scope and depth of the two aforementioned classics but it's exactly the Godspeed album I needed from them at the time.

Hope you really enjoyed the show because this is one band I'd pay three digits to see.

DeadChannel 12-09-2014 11:55 PM

Yeah, I definitely approved of A!BDA. Mladic was my go to track for my daily bus ride for a while. I agree it's not at the level of something like f# a#, but it just sounds so huge.

Yeah, it was worth it. I caught the only 1/2 of it though because it was a short set, and DC traffic fucking sucks dick.

Lisnaholic 12-10-2014 06:39 AM

Hey, bump away guys! I´m right now in the process of falling in love with GY!BE, having downloaded the 4 albums and EP ( F#A#, Slow Riot, Skinny Fists, Yanqui, and Allelujah.) For me their only failings are a couple of tracks that have too much drone, or ill-chosen spoken word sections - that BBF story for example.

^ Hey, me too, DeadChannel, Mladic is a great piece of driving music!

Two quick questions before I go to work, please:-

(i) When people are talking about "the new album" do they mean Allelujah ?

(ii) What´s the verdict about these YouTube clips; genuine GY!BE material or hoax ? ( I don´t want to start enthusing about about a piece of music until I can be sure of its provenance  )

James 12-10-2014 07:26 AM

I was thinking of getting tickets to see them. Feel like it'd be a unique experience.

Lisnaholic 12-10-2014 03:57 PM

Unless they´re really expensive I´d give it a go, James. From what people say they put on a good performance and YOLO !

DeadChannel 12-10-2014 04:12 PM

They're on my list of bands to see. Sadly, that list has very few checkmarks.

GreenSplendor 02-27-2015 11:17 AM

I remember liking "sleep" a lot, but other than that... nice and dull.

That picture is their actual first album from 1994, but nobody's sure if the recording is real.

Lisnaholic 02-28-2015 06:38 PM

Thanks for replying, Josef K. :)

TBH, I´ve calmed down from my initial infatuation with Black Emperor and now find some of their material a bit dull (to copy GreenSplendor´s judgement). I am especially disappointed with the Yanqui UXB album; it sounds as if they deliberately purged their material of all the things that made the earlier albums so good - the atmospheric violins, the sampled voices and the sinister poetry were all abandoned. Maybe they were trying to make some existential statement about artistic austerity, but imo they threw out the baby with the bathwater. It was those well-placed touches that gave their music its special atmosphere, and without those, Urban´s dismissal begins to ring true:-
