Lift Your Skinny Fists is great, but F♯ A♯ ∞ is the better Godspeed album imo.

Alfred 08-08-2011 10:49 PM

I can't praise either one of them enough, but I think Lift Yr. Skinny Fists is just a bit better. I prefer it for its more upbeat, uplifting nature, larger scope, and themes.

That said, F# A# ∞ is really something special. Many bands have emulated the type of vibes found on LYSF, but F# A# is unlike anything I've ever heard. That dark, eerie, yet somehow hopeful mood is what sets it apart from everything else. It may be the single most terrifying album I've ever heard (some parts are almost unlistenable for me in a dark room) but also one of the most beautiful.

Laurent Quinn Proper 08-09-2011 08:16 AM

I listen to their entire discography as I am going to sleep. Sometimes I'll have gnarly dreams because of the fantastic soundtrack lingering in the background.

Mykonos 08-10-2011 03:50 AM

No love for Yanqui? I know it's not as good as the first two (and Slow Riot) but Atoms Fall and Mother****er are amazing.

Alfred 08-10-2011 09:30 AM

Yanqui is awesome, but it's just not as adventurous or challenging compared to their other efforts. That said, it's still a lot better than anything most other post-rock bands put out.

Itsme 08-14-2011 09:51 PM

I like these guys, though I do feel like there could be a bit more going on a lot of the time, they're a bit on the monotonous side at times.

tensionlikefire 08-18-2011 07:37 AM

F# A# ∞ is easily one of my favourite albums, and Lift Your Skinny Fists is yet another good album.

They're a rather strange band, and you either love them or hate them.

Frownland 08-20-2011 05:09 PM

I'm diggin these guys, sounds like THE band to smoke ope and fall into a pipe dream to. Before the contender was Sunn O))) but these guys take the cake because you're less likely to fall into a pipe-nightmare about leaving the refrigerator open.

Godspeed is playing Coachella... now I've heard/seen everything.

Alfred 01-09-2012 09:35 PM

Yes.

Best festival lineup of all time? Not that I will be attending, but this is pretty damn great. Will be watching the streams for sure.

Not attending either, but:

Refused, Explosions in the Sky, Death Grips, Bon Iver, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Flying Lotus TuNeYaRDs, Zed's Dead, Borgore (lol), DJ mu****in SHADOW, Nero, Flux Pavillion, Seun Kuti and the Egypt 80 (they need to get their **** right, it aint "Seun Keti, Egypt 80"), COMPANY mu****in FLOW (El-P's gonna be there what?!) and Noisia.

RVCA 01-09-2012 10:20 PM

I could attend but... it's just not worth it. I want to see Refused, ATDI, and GYBE play full sets.

Howard the Duck 01-15-2012 12:20 AM

only just starting to get into GYBE

though i would prefer their songs to be entirely instrumental (some have soundbites and narration)

i heard that a few of the recent albums doesn't have this

Goofle 01-15-2012 06:18 AM

This may be too good a festival line-up, there is almost too much choice.
Absolutely incredible line-up.

I honestly think that the samples and ambient noise make their music so much more interesting, lifelike, and dynamic than that of say Explosions In The Sky or This Will Destroy You.

But it is true, their last album, Yanqui U.X.O doesn't have any samples (unless you get the vinyl version which has a bonus track that does).

Laurent Quinn Proper 02-15-2012 11:21 AM

Does anybody have a high resolution photo of F# A# Infinity (vinyl)?

Laurent Quinn Proper 02-15-2012 11:22 AM

By the way, I saw Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra two nights ago. Efrim's my god.

They're playing a week's worth of shows in San Francisco April 16-20th.

Wish they'd come to Austin sometime. They always leave us out of their tour cities.

Found out something interesting

The preacher's speech on Static is actually a woman's voice slowed down.

If you speed it up about 17% you can hear how it originally sounded.

That is strange, that truly sounds like a man's voice. I wonder why GS!BE did that. Well I guess this is a testament to the fact that men are the only ones that can preach, for even the women have a fragment of men within them /satiric_prejudice_bullsh!t

Interesting fact! Makes a lot of sense, the voice always sounded really strange to me.

Just got my tickets for the fall tour. FINALLY.

I got to see ASMZ in February now GY!BE in October. I'm so excited.

Hoouwit 08-06-2012 07:56 AM

Caught these guys at Coachella. I'm ashamed to admit that I had not checked them out previously. They were amazing. Exactly the kind of stuff I love - atmospheric and ominous, slow build ups to crashing cresendos. They turned off the stage lights and side of stage screens and projected film over the stage from the sound booth. Loved it.

Mother of god...

I'm not expecting it to be on the level of RYSFLATH but even Yanqui's worst moments were 1000 times better than the majority of music ever made so I'm very hopeful.

Mojo 10-02-2012 09:07 AM

As it's out there, circulating around at live shows, then I'm sure theres a leaked version. As it comes out on my birthday in two weeks time, I think it's meant to be that I refrain from checking the leak. Happy birthday to me.

Two nights in town and of course tickets are sold out well before I even heard they were happening.

I'm seeing them on November 5th in London. Feel free to express your envy.

Alfred 10-07-2012 10:11 AM

Other than Radiohead, Godspeed are the one band I want to see more than any other. So yes, I am jealous.

Sneer 10-07-2012 02:39 PM

I'm seeing Radiohead on Tuesday! Paha, sorry Alf.

That sounds like one hell of a bonfire night. A friend of mine who's seen them before says they're one of the most spellbinding bands he's ever witnessed. Apparently they make no contact with the audience whatsoever, they just enter the stage one by one and play their hearts out for the evening. Have fun.

This makes me more angry. Mostly because I had tickets to the doomed Toronto show.

Godspeed are one of the most amazing bands ever. absolutely love them.

Chives 10-26-2012 07:26 PM

Decided to check out Godspeed based on what I've heard about them here on MB. I'm a little torn on how I feel about them, though.

I listened to F♯ A♯ ∞ (vinyl version) and 'Like Antennas' and they both were fascinating listens. I've never really heard anything like it before. I definitely see the comparisons between film and tv scores (at points, at least) mentioned way early in the thread. I feel like they try and tell a story through sounds, or something like that. I wasn't really able to pick up on what that story was, but it was still very cool!

On the other hand, it was a bit tiring to listen to multiple songs in a row. Very long pieces, and it was easy to lose focus on the song during the down parts. I know it's part of the pacing to incite atmosphere but that doesn't really help keep me interested. So while I'm interested I also feel like it's not totally accessible to me. I'll give some more listening time to them, though, since my interest outweighs the problems I have.

The LP version of F♯ A♯ ∞ is way better imo
