Does anybody else like this band? If you don't listen to them, there album Grand Opening and Closing is one of the most proggish bands I have heard in a long time. The creativity in the songs and the instruments is stunning, using everything from food containers to an electric violin.
The genres of avant-garde and metal blend to create this truly unique song. It's like combination of Thinking Plague, Mr. Bungle, and King Crimson, with a few Zappa rifts scattered throughout many of the songs. It's worth a listen, don't get intimidated by the first song, it is one of the most metal on there.

As a warning, it definitely is influenced by metal, so if you can't stand any form of metal, you won't like it. As soon as I figure out how to upload an album i'll post the link for anyone who wants to listen.

Sparky 02-24-2007 01:20 PM

i tried getting into them a while back and couldn't, but ill give them another shot.

The Unfan 02-24-2007 01:33 PM

Super creative band. The music is very well crafted and unique. I dig the **** out of them, especially when they do more experimental stuff.

beat yr own KID 02-24-2007 04:40 PM

I already bought my ticket to see them and Secret Chiefs 3. Hoollyyyy **** that show is gonna be amazing.

chronoclast 02-24-2007 06:32 PM

I do know how to do it over aim/msn. But I actually haven't gotten around to downloading the aim/msn program, because I don't ever use it. If worse comes to worse, I'll do that.

Is it still ticking over? Sometimes it will timeout and you won't know whether it's doing anything or not.

I use Send big files the easy way with sendspace. Files too large for email attachments? No problem!, seems to be more reliable and userfriendly. Haven't tried Swims suggestion yet but thats there to try also.

Woah, I just typed in the url and it came up with that massive quip.

Dear God, it's all in Dutch (I think), I'll try to translate through the possible Dutch and use it, but thanks for the time saver. However, the first 2 songs finally downloaded. I'll do the others tomorrow, I have to meet some friends for a movie in about 10 minutes.

I'm wearing a STG museum shirt right now. Excellent band. I am excited for the new album.

Kevorkian Logic 02-28-2007 08:12 PM

Oh, I hadn't actually heard about the new album. Do you know anything about it?

Muzak 03-01-2007 04:39 PM

All I know is that its coming out this year. :)

They released a sample song from the new album here:
http://www.thewire.co.uk/m3u/kihlste...leofrepose.m3u

It sounds good to me.

Kevorkian Logic 03-01-2007 05:40 PM

sounds pretty decent to me as well.

Boskov 07-23-2008 11:43 AM

Possibly one of my favorite bands ever, alongside Idiot Flesh. Certainly needs more attention.

I'm waiting for a new album, but the front remains quite. :(

Who's with me?

Unfortunately, this band has been naively lumped into the "metal" category.

Here. Give them a listen.

Angel of Repose

Helpless Corpses Enactment

Hymn to the Morning Star

Nice vids. I see you're still after dem eggs. You know, in case you weren't familiar with the female anatomy, at around 50 or so her eggs won't be of any use to you ...

Wink.

I'm going to see them on the 26th about 3 hours away from where I live in South Carolina, so they're on tour this month at least. Look it up.

333 04-27-2009 03:38 PM

So, I just saw these guys with this guy ^ last night. ****ING EPIC SHOW! Hands down, best show I've seen this year. It's amazing how chaotic they can be, yet so organized and together. They are truly underrated musicians. Carla Kihlstedt is actually 5.5 months pregnant right now, and she STILL rocked it. And yes, she's the hottest pregnant chick you'll ever lay eyes on. The energy they emitted sunk into me almost immediately. I highly recommend them live. I would go as far as to say they are even better live than they are on they're albums.

I love SGM. I've recorded two shows with my trusty Mini DV camcorder, one in Nashville, the other here in Seattle.

I think they're closer to Prog than anything else

I only have Grand Opening and Closing but thought it was pretty cool. Haven't been in the right mood to do any further exploration of their catalogue though. Never been too sure what makes something prog so no idea on that point.

Of Natural History is even better than Grand Opening and Closing and is well worth your while.

In Glorious Times is just okay, but still worth checking out if you like the other two.

I think the high points of GO&C are slightly better than the best of ONH, but I think the first album is much more consistent. There are some down moments of GO&C ("The Creature") but the way that albums opens is just unbefeckinglievable, and Freedom Club is as well. But then again so are "Sleep Is Wrong: and "Ambugaton".

When I get some time I'll upload some songs to YouTube that I recorded and post them to this thread

"The Creature" is on ONH actually, but I like that track regardless. Also, "The Donkey-Headed Adversary of Humanity Opens the Discussion" (probably my favorite thing they've ever done), "Phthisis", "Bring Back the Apocalypse" and "FC: The Freedom Club" are four of my favorite SMG songs. The fact that they all happen in a row on ONH is what makes it my favorite of their albums.

That said, I love GO&C as well. "Sleep is Wrong", "Powerless", and to a lesser extent, "1997" are some of my favorite SMG songs as well.

Either way, I think we can both agree they put on a hell of a live show. I saw them without knowing anything about them and was completely blown away. That's what got me into them.

Absofeckinglutely. I've already posted the Two Foot Yard clips from the show they played with SGM, it's just a matter of finding the time to upload some of the SGM songs to YouTube, I will be posting them here

Cool. Look forward to it.

anathematized_one 05-30-2013 10:35 AM

I have loved everything they ever did, even that DVD "The Face".

They recently split, which sucks because the ONLY chance I had to see them, they were performing in a bar that you have to be 21 to get into and I was only 20 at the time.

As a side note, have any of you been to any of those lyric meaning/interpretation sites and read some of the interpretations for Of Natural History!? It is hilarious! Tons of people tried to say "A Hymn to the Morning Star" was satanic. XD

I went on one of them and wrote practically a 10,000 word essay on how nothing in the lyrics even comes close to being satanic or referring to Lucifer and gave the surface meaning of it (it is about Christianity), then further showed how that it was an allegory for the futurist movement and how the whole album is a metaphor of a dialogue between The Unibomber/Naturalist futurism and Dadaist futurism and then topped off the whole thing with a giant "even the band explicitly stated that is what the album is about".

Also, the music video for "Helpless Corpses Enactment" is one of the best music videos I ever have seen.
