A short post-rock(ish) song of my own...

This is a track I made recently. It has a lot of Sigur Ros elements in it, though it is a very short song. It's really simple in almost every way possible, but, that's what I was going for. I love simplicity in music, I find it beautiful for some reason. I'd love to hear any thoughts you may have, whether they be good or bad.

I do want to note that I'm actually a guitar player, though, my guitar playing isn't really present on this song. I'll probably post a song in the future to actually feature that, since thats the biggest main stay in more or less everything else I do.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy, and thank you for listening.

Well done, I'm eager to see what else you can do.

Thank you. I'm actually planning on having a concept album finished by January 1st, so I will definitely be putting up new material as I go.

I don't like the piano,
but otherwise it's pretty. Well done, I suppose :)

Thank you for your honesty. What don't you like about the piano, just the general melody itself?

Astronomer 11-14-2008 02:34 PM

I've just had a second listen and like it better. I actually really like the general melody and the notes of the piano. The rest of the music and sounds are just so soft and flowing and I think the piano becomes a bit block-ish about halfway through the song. Like it could use some damper pedal or something. The piano at the beginning, before this, I really like though. Because as you said, it's simple, but really pretty.

I didn't mean to say outrightly that I didn't like it, well done because it is really nice!

Thank you again for your comments, I do see what you mean. I think using a damper pedal would actually make it sound a lot softer and overall just a little less straight, if that makes sense. Sadly, I'm using the Garageband piano, so off the bat, I can't really use a damper pedal. I can make another track and make it cutoff a little more, dampening it a bit though, which I may try. I also had the thought to roll the piano chords a little at the peak of the track, while maybe layering in a quiet Rhodes of some sort to add soft texture to the actual piano. Anyways, thanks again for the thoughts, and I'm very glad you enjoyed it.

I tried to listen to it again myself, and I ran into this problem too, so I uploaded it to yousendit and put the link in the original post.

There is the seed of a great song there. The melody is spot on regarding a Post Rock template but it sounds like the beginning of a track and not fully formed. Is the piano riff the songs basis?

It is. I came up with it while just mucking about with some easy chords, and I honestly wasn't even sure if I would use it at first. The first night I came up with the strings and some of the other earlier parts, and at first thought it was ok, but I listened back the next morning and thought it was great. Everything is actually the first take I think.

Do you feel having it develop further and for a longer period of time it would feel more complete? Or do you mean there should be more to what's already there, in terms of layers and so on?

jackhammer 11-15-2008 06:53 PM

No more layers just more continuation and expansion. Post Rock needs to take it's time. You listen to it, don't you think that's the best way forward?

Well, yes, I have to agree. When I originally had the idea for the track, it was suppsoed to be about 7 minutes or so. When I started to work on it though, I stumbled onto a short ending. I'll probably start working with it again to see what I can come up with. I've had a lot more post-rock ideas lately because I've been exposed to a lot of new material, so I think I could do some great things with it.

I think adding layers couldn't hurt. That's what I love about post rock, there's always so much going on, but at the same time, it never overwhelms you. Great great song though. Definite Sigur Ros feel to it, and that's always a good thing.
