First came prog, then the nerdy stigma drove me out of there into jazz school, where I opened to hip hop/soul/electronic, which led me into more and more extravagant textures, and eventually I realized all I wanted was sonic exploration more so than any trope or idiom. In university I joined a free music improv group, and since then it's "all sound is music" if you let it be. Now there's sort of no end to the excitement.

I knew someone who boasted about challenging/hard music. Wanted to see what the fuss was all about. Just as I thought, it ain’t all that.

Did you get into any of it?

In a way, I guess. It was TMR. I wasn’t like blown away or anything but it did make me think that I could see the potential of me liking experimental music of a different kind.

That’s also the start of me avoiding snobs/purists.

Isn't dismissing experimental music a form of snobbery in itself?

Anyway, I like TMR too.

Maybe it’s a poor choice of word (english is my third language). The intention was to say that the music was not as challenging as I thought, it was not for me. But I saw the potential. I didn’t attack anyone’s preference. And if that still counts as snobbery maybe I should have chosen other words.

This girl is still learning life

Addendum: I actually love experimental music. I have listened to enough stuff after TMR (over ten years ago) to learn the type of experimental style that i can enjoy.

I got into it for disliking big sellers. I can hear the compromises made to get them to sell.

Not sure I'm going to stick around for this group because it's the same 150 bands and artists that I've already got all their discographies and don't need to discover. I have nothing to say about them. This music discussion forum is going to break my heart again.
