Well, this damn band grew on me. I now have listened to their first three albums and (for some reason) loved it. Why are they so great?

dankrsta 12-22-2010 11:32 AM

^I'm glad it finally worked for you. What is it that you love this time? What was the hook?

TockTockTock 12-23-2010 11:07 PM

I have a question. In one of their interviews, they said that they were artists and not musicians. I'm confused in this. I thought all musicians were artists?

dankrsta 12-24-2010 10:38 AM

^Well, they were interested in concepts and ideas as much if not more than music. Music was one way to express those concepts, but not the only one. Performance played a big part also, not to mention philosophy, interest in subversive and transgressive literature and just one strong attitude which was not mere rebellion in a conventional rock 'n' roll sense of the word.

For those who like Throbbing Gristle and Jimi Hendrix, take a look at this:
YouTube - Psychic TV - Are You Experienced

Genesis P-Orridge is a founding member of this group. This song is just amazing.

Yeah, this has been one of my favorite all time covers ever since i first heard that back around 88 or so. That's a good thing to post.

I have yet another question pertaining to industrial music (sorry). Here it is: Why did TG frequently display pornography, gory/disturbing images, etc at their live performances and (occasionally) on their releases (such as with D.o.A. The Third and Final Report)? I know that they didn't do it for the shock value (they have made this abundantly clear on several occasions), but I am still in the dark as in why they did it... Did they show those images as a continuation of what they were doing with their music... which aided them in exploring and representing the darker side of humanity... or is there another reason?

Despite what they say I'm still voting for shock value on that one.

Why do you say that?

Farfisa 01-16-2012 07:21 AM

My theory is that they included such dark themes in their live performances mainly to showcase how awful humanity is/can be. I often get hung up on the more despicable and disgusting things people have done, mainly because people don't like to look at them, so those qualities of humanity are often ignored. I often see TG as one of those entities that flesh out every negative thing they can all for the sake of being a counterpoint to say, maybe, people who think the world is full of dandelions and twee music.

I find it a bit sad when you have ultra conservative types who berate/harass artists that represent or present the darker side of humanity when they are essential to help keep a healthy state of mind. The only example I can think of right now is when a bunch of knee-jerk protestors had gotten a bunch of DIJ and Boyd Rice shows canceled due to constant threats and angry letters sent to the venues booking them.

Subject: Fascist Tour--WE NEED YOUR HELP

We are writing to you today to make you aware that a fascist music
tour is scheduled for the Northwest featuring Boyd Rice and Death In
June.

For a detailed report visit www.nwchd.org/allthefuss.html

Boyd Rice, member of the now defunct neo-Nazi organization America
Front will play two shows in early November (Portland and Seattle)
with the European music act Death In June.

Unless we can successfully mobilize against him, Boyd Rice and Death
In June will perform in Portland and Seattle during the same week as
the anniversary Kristallnact ("Night of Broken Glass")

Kristallnact is the infamous night that Nazis looted and then
destroyed thousands of Jewish homes and businesses throughout
Germany. Nazi led mobs set fire to nearly 200 synagogues, murdered
over ninety Jews, and sent thirty thousand others to concentration
camps. Two days later, the Nazi government fined the Jewish
community one billion marks for "property damaged in the rioting."

The Northwest Coalition for Human Dignity have asked both the
Catwalk Club and Berbati's Pan to cancel the shows. This is not a
question of free speech. Bookers, promoters and club owners decide
everyday what bands they want to play in music establishments. This
is no more censorship than choosing a rock group over a country act.
The Northwest Coalition has asked both venues to uphold the
traditions of diversity and equality rather than the fascist ideas
of hate and bigotry promoted by Boyd Rice/NON and Death in June. NOW
THE NORTHWEST COALITION FOR HUMAN DIGNITY NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Boyd Rice goes to great lengths to cleanse the true nature of his
embrace of fascism—casting his bigotry in a carefully coded language
of arts, music, and "fetishism". This effort by Boyd Rice to make
friendly the face of hate in the Northwest deserves the attention of
all who value civil and human

rights.

Boyd Rice and Death In June will perform:

Wednesday, November 6, Berbati's Pan 231 SW Akeny, Portland, 8:30
pm. 503-248-4579

Friday, November 8, The Catwalk Club, 172 S. Washington, Seattle,
9:00 pm. 206-622-1863

The Northwest Coalition for Human Dignity calls on all those who
oppose bigotry to call Berbati's Pan in Portland and the Catwalk
Club in Seattle to ask that they not allow Boyd Rice and Death In
June to play their venues.

All times are GMT -6. The time now is 05:09 AM.
