Default Schoenberg threw out the baby with the bathwater

The baby being the triad, the bathwater being the V7 chord.

Didn't Schoenberg keep a cat in a box, and he didn't even know if it was alive or dead? If he did that today I bet PITA would be after him.

His idea was that if you keep a cat in a soundproofed box, you can't declare that its screech is in a key or follows the 12 tone technique until you open the box and hear it.

I heard there was a mini-piano, and a flask of radioactive poison in the box. The cat played the mini-piano, which was rigged to a hammer. If the cat played a single note twice, before going through all twelve tones, the hammer would far and break the flask releasing the radioactive poison. The cat due to exposure from the increase of gamma radiation would smash out of the box and start to compose atonal music.
