Let's begin with Damo

Oh cool, I only know this one by Czukay. It tends to cross the line of aimless goofery a bit too much sometimes, but it's fun and at its best I like it a lot

Yeah as a front man he would sometimes ramp up the goofiness to the point where it was overdone. That was my impression when I saw him live some 15 years ago with backing musicians that weren't up to the standard you'd expect from collaborators of Holger Czukay, to put it politely.

I kinda do like his two biggest solo hits, Cool in the Pool and Persian Love from Movies (1979).




But overall seems like he's more interesting when he's not the face of the project but the multi-instrumentalist and sonic genius, as here:

I'm a big CAN fan, but know nothing about their solo efforts, so this thread will be a great chance for me to learn about what these guys did post-CAN. Thanks, jadis.

My pleasure, this will be fun. Wish that rostasi would fix his computer situation or whatever it is that's keeping him away, I'm sure he has a lot to contribute to this thread.

They were all great but my personal favorite Can guy is probably Irmin Schmidt.

This Guardian profile is really interesting: "I grew up in total ruins"

This is a really good track with his long-time collaborator Kuno/Jono Podmore (at some point I'll post something from the opera they collaborated on).




He has some music for prepared piano à la John Cage (with hints of Kurtag's Játékok imo), and while this bit isn't necessarily the highlight, I like watching him play it:

Yes, to all that, jadis! I hope it'll be fun - and rostasi has the most extraordinary knowledge of music.

I really enjoyed the newspaper article, and in fact sent it on to a friend of mine.
Of the music so far, I think I liked the first two best: the Damo Suzuki track, and Marie Monday's "Rome Remains Rome."

The great Jaki Liebezeit plays on this track.



Knew about the band, but I only just found out about Jaki and Hugo's involvement with Phew when I was looking at their catalogs.



Same for Jaki's role on this European free jazz classic



Honourable mention: Liebezeit's dank drum solo at a Can show. Not sure how true it is but one of the comments says that he was carrying the show while they fixed a power outage.

The Phew album is brilliant. Never heard of this artist, had no idea this collaboration existed. Great stuff!

Anyone familiar with Czukay's early Technical Space Composer's Crew project?
He only released a single album under that heading but there's some pretty evocative sound collage type stuff on it:
