^ Well, this thread has been worth a visit for this post alone!

^ Yeah, I was wondering when someone would point out that recording technology would render moot the arguments of RS and Exo. Actually, I'm leaning to the theory that rubber soul's mum was dating Del Shannon at the time Runaway was released. He could've sung it to her while they were courting and given her a signed copy as a keepsake. It all falls into place if we accept that rubber soul is Del Shannon's illegitimate love child; he heard Runaway both in and out of the womb and now has it hard-wired into his DNA.

As for the song, Runaway, I like the hook, Run Run Runaway, but for me Del Shannon was the kind of artist I was happy to leave behind in favour of the Beatles/Stones/Kinks etc. so I don't think you're missing out on much, Qwertyy.

Pretty much the only reason threads like these are in the Classical section is bc some people apparently can't read and think this sub-forum is for anything that makes them go "wow, that's a real classic!"
I bet there's a thread in here somewhere about The Oddysey or something too.

I don't know much about Del Shannon, but when I get back from work I'm going to track down the mods of 2005 and give them a real roasting for leaving a Del Shannon thread in the Classical Music section!

I remember a few hits by Del Shannon from the Oldies station on long car trips. Runaway had this strange electric organ in it. I found out called "the Musictron" which was a modified clavioline keyboard. Hats off to Larry was an earworm all through grade-school. It's still an earworm whenever I am twenty feet near anyone named Larry. Del Shannon was one of Jeff Lynn's influences. He actually got to work with him on the album "Rock On!" which was release in '91 released after Del Shannon died.

The song I like by him is Keep Searchin', it was release in '65 and there is a bit of British Invasion or (UK) beat music influence there - I think. Maybe it's a unlikely coincidence but the song reminds of The Searchers.
Del Shannon - Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow The Sun)

Definitely British Invasion influenced. I think he did a tour or two in England Pre-Beatle invasion.

He was also the first one to technically chart with a Beatle song. He recorded From Me To You not long after the Beatles did and it made the Bubbling Under on Billboard in 1963. Not a great version, but interesting trivia none the same.
