Probably not so much underrated by peers or classical aficionado's, but probably less well known than deserves to be so would be Cesar Franck. Fairly unsuccessful in his time though.

Philip Glass, Frank Zappa and Steve Reich are pretty underrated in my opinion.

I agree, but with Zappa I think it has more to do with not being known or recognized of his classical work, but rather with his rock and jazz-rock work.

Yeah. I meant Zappa's classical work, his rock and jazz albums aren't really underrated.

I am a massive fan of Reich. I am of the opinion that he is the most influential Classical musician in terms of crossover appeal over the last 50 years. His 60's tape loop work is astonishing. It's Gonna Rain and Come Out where ahead of their time and IMO the likes of Pink Floyd through to Eno through to just about every electronic artist owes Reich a debt of gratitude. Eno in fact mentions him on the cover notes for My Life From The Bush Of Ghosts for Come Out alone. An incredible piece of tape loop minimalism. I find it spellbinding though I do realise that it may not be to everyone's taste.

I could rave about his work for ages. Drumming, Music For 18 Musicians and Different Trains for example. Wonderful stuff.

And for those that may find that a bit daunting maybe Reich Remixed.

P.S. I am a Glass fan as well. As to Zappa I don't know enough though Zarko tells me I should get into him a bit more and intend to take his advice.

I thank you for mentioning Zappa. I encourage anyone to get the album, "Yellow Shark" as a representation of his orchestral composing prowess. I would also like to mention John Cage, as he is genius and I feel he has been hidden from me.

I agree that Chopin was amazing and wonderful, but I wouldn't call him underrated. He's been well credited and recognized for his brilliance.
