Just to bear this out (and be DONE with the uber off-topic matter of whether or not Pluto is a planet), Pluto is merely the second largest green dot in this chart

Tough Choice...
Well! This is truly a difficult decision. I must vote for Mars, as I find it suits it well. When a lot of people think "war" the majority of people may think Fortissimo, whilst staccatto. I find it is different, as I picture it more as an internal intensity and panic within one's self. Just a personal response to ponder...

Jupiter's sonic happiness in the allegro and the slightly cheesy but bad ass maestoso in the middle beats everything else Holst has done by miles in my opinion. That said, I do like the entire suite very much.

The entire suite is beautiful; although it is a shame music like this isn't as brilliantly composed anymore...

Saturn. As mentioned earlier, love the slow, atmospheric build up. I own the performance by James Levine / Chicago SO which is excellent all round!

No mention of Mercury, I love that piece on two levels. 1) such a quick, flighty, darty little fellow, 2) a nearly perfect transition from the lilting beauty of Venus to the grand Jupiter
|
I had never heard this suite before this thread; it's quite good. Favourite at this moment is Venus, though I need to give the whole thing (particularly the last few "planet"s) a few more listens.

I actually think Mars because I think we have a lot as humans to learn from it and it's really fascinating how they are currently trying to work out it's geology and how the planet was made.

I'm extremely hesitant to challenge such a lovely smart lady on her posting, but I am duty bound to point out that this thread is asking which is your favorite of the seven movements of the orchestral suite by Gustav Holst inspired by the Planets in our solar system, not about those planets themselves... http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/us...404/tiptoe.gif |
