in no particular order:

1. bartók (the string quartets)
2. zoltán kodály (the cello sonata, op. 8, played by rostropovich kills me every time)
3. rachmaninov (especially the sonata for cello and piano and the piano concertos)
4. mahler
5. bach (in particular the 6 cello suites)

i know it says top 5 but i also adore dvořák and debussy.

2. Wolgang Mozart
3. Tchaikovsky

There are so many to choose from.

Being a classically trained pianist I'm a sucker for the Romantics - Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin etc.

One of my favourite has to be Poulenc - French composer

very difficult... just 5? I take it we're using "classical" in the general sense then

Maybe: - Bach
- Beethoven
- Stravinsky
- Bartok
- Charles Ives

honorable mentions: Purcell, Messiaen, Domenico Scarlatti, Sibelius, Mozart, Dumitrescu, Debussy, Scelsi, Respighi, Partch... gaargh and so many more!
