Percussion has long been a big part of the Classical mainstream.

In the first movement of what some people say the finest Symphony of the 20th Century, Neilsen's fifth, the percussion is ordered to stop the rest of the orchestra!

One of Ive's symphonies has marching bands in it deliberately out of sync, which makes great percussion.
