Cat Stevens, 1st thread about him? oh man..

ok, hope it's in the right category, if not don't blame me, blame ... the ****ty weather, ok?

so.. Cat Stevens.. i hope there aren't 152478451325 threads about him (in fact, i couldn't find any). i love the fact that when i'm depressed and listen to his music, it calms me down and... well his voice annoys me a bit sometimes (why should i lie) but.. i really really like his music. he's really talented

so what are your opinions on him?

PhishFood 06-08-2005 09:19 PM

MURDER JUNKIE 01-06-2006 09:42 AM

:ar_15s: He is still a terrorist:ar_15s:

TheBig3 01-06-2006 04:39 PM

Terrorist. That should be enough to get some big governmental agency come look here.

Since I was name dropped in the OP, Ill say this: He has some song with the refrain "do you remember the days of the old school yard" and its so packed in, and terrible.

I liken it to when people are like "remember when he had recess as kids and snakc time" and then they wax philisophical about how life was great then and children are true free spirits.

Its a song written about something you think, not a song you actually lived and that always, always, makes for a bad song. And thats why I think he's a hack, I like the other stuff I've heard.

holdfasthope 01-06-2006 04:42 PM

what?

Sabgoat 01-06-2006 05:06 PM

You mean Yusuf Islam. Music aside, he is garbage as a human being.

i get high sometimes 08-12-2007 07:51 PM

Why is that? I'm really not well read on his life, so maybe he has done some dispicable things, but what?

Son of JayJamJah 08-12-2007 08:08 PM

Actually to be fair, I just don't like him. And it should be noted he was recently greatly mistreated by the American Transportation Security Administration. He converted to Islam and has denounced the Islamo-fascists like Al-Queda. Really I should not even bad mouth him because my dislike is based on interviews he gave in the 1970's that I found to be racist, and anti-American. Still if I'm honest, I don't know anything about who he is now other then what I have told you and his music is pretty solid so I "my bad" on this one.

right-track 08-13-2007 01:18 PM

He also publicly called for the death of Salman Rushdie, when a fatwa was put on him following the publication of his book, The Satanic Verses.

Don't you just love religious people!

dog 08-14-2007 02:21 AM

whats a fatwa?

dojo 08-14-2007 08:47 AM

I have many songs I love in his discography. Not my favourite singer, but one of the artists I truly love

A fatwa is made by a mufti...duh.

right-track 08-14-2007 10:35 AM

Pokémon fatwa.

The mufti: Saudi Arabia’s Higher Committee for Scientific Research and Islamic Law

What: Denouncing the lovable Japanese cartoon characters as having “possessed the minds” of Saudi youngsters, Saudi Arabia’s highest religious authority banned Pokémon video games and cards in the spring of 2001. Not only do Saudi scholars believe that Pokémon encourages gambling, which is forbidden in Islam, but it is apparently a front for Israel as well. The fatwa’s authors claimed that Pokémon games include, “the Star of David, which everyone knows is connected to international Zionism and is Israel’s national emblem.” Religious authorities in the United Arab Emirates joined in, condemning the games for promoting evolution, “a Jewish-Darwinist theory that conflicts with the truth about humans and with Islamic principles,” but didn’t ban them outright. Even the Catholic Church in Mexico got into the act, calling Pokémon video games “demonic.”

Incredible innit!

Yeah it seems like you're pretty ignorant when it comes to this subject.

Yusuf Islam didn't call for the death of Salman Rushdie at all... What he said was if anyone denounces the Qur'an it is punishable by death in Islamic law.

devindissell 05-28-2008 06:39 PM

i've heard "Wild World" about 20 times in the past week and normally i'd be sick of any one song by the 3rd go around but it's so simple yet sounds so good. his voice can get a bit annoying but its also strangely comforting.

Which is a subtler way or calling for his death, yeah it seems like you're pretty ignorant when it comes to this subject.

tea for the tillerman is the perfect lazy summer afernoon album. it takes you to different time and place.

'Trouble' is one of my favorites. Its not one of his that you would hear on the radio. you should give it a listen

jacintamlh 11-01-2008 07:09 PM

I love listening to Cat Stevens. My two favorite songs are Peace Train and Moonshaddow. I can't decide between them.

Gosh, guy, we LIVED through this...

He gave up EVERYTHING ~ his wealth, his fame, everything ~ and turned his back on all of it, guided by his own heart and beliefs.

Everyone i knew at the time had nothing but respect for him; lots of sadness that he'd never write or perform or sing again, but he had to follow HIS heart.

At the time, i didn't really know all that much about Islam ~ when i went to school in french Morocco, it was Arabic, yes, but i went to a french catholic school, so i only knew about Islam from the other children in the neighborhood, and kids don't talk religion all that much. ;) It was more an observation, on my part, that it truly WAS different than the US and how we were.

Well, Cat hung the Moonshadow, for sure.
