Beirut

Hey you. You should check out beirut (with a lowercase 'b').

http://www.myspace.com/beruit

Beyond amazing, as evident with his instrumentation. I've been looking for this kind of sound for a while, and I'm happy to have stumbled upon this guy. According to his lastfm profile, he's only 19 and recorded Gulag Orkestar at home.

(Sorry I didn't put this in the folk forum, but I figured it'd get more attention - if any- here)

adidasss 05-20-2006 01:33 PM

so is it beirut or beruit?

swim 05-20-2006 01:46 PM

That was enjoyable. He has great musicianship.

adidasss 05-20-2006 02:05 PM

great music...must download album....

adidasss 05-20-2006 05:18 PM

downloaded the album...it's beautiful...i can't, no, i REFUSE to believe this guy is 19 and recorded it himself....
it reminds me of Goran Bregovic's Orchestra for weddings and funerals, the whole gypsy sad trumpet thing...
it was always obvious hat balkan gypsy music was very special ( ever since i saw Kusturica's "Time of the gypsies" that was before he went all wacko chetnik on our asses ), but what bothered me were the gypsy vocals that gave it that nasty balkan spin....this was the combo i've been waiting for, a blend of american folk vocals and the gypsy trumpets and violins...

blackTshirt 05-20-2006 09:13 PM

aww yeah i like it too

adidasss 05-21-2006 07:19 AM

i'm addicted....this is one of the best albums i've heard this year...thanks leroy...:)

i think by the next week i'll have him on top of my last.fm list...it's incredibly addictive....heartbreakingly beautiful....

Did anyone else notice that the song 'Postcards From Italy' is the EXACT same riff as 'I Want You' by Bob Dylan?

march666 05-30-2006 11:18 PM

if you like beirut you should check out Sunset Rubdown

adidasss 05-31-2006 03:04 AM

( have nothing to do with each other apart from the fact that they're doing some gigs together )

swim 07-13-2006 06:00 PM

Sound Devastation 07-14-2006 04:35 AM

adidasss 01-09-2007 12:16 PM

The new EP, called "Lon Gisland" is out!! One free track on this webpage

Timorous Vince 01-09-2007 04:21 PM

I dislike them. They seem to rip-off Neutral Milk Hotel, minus the amazing lyrics.. I would probably like them if there was a more-competent lyricist. But anybody can mimic an eastern-European style and spoon-feed it to scenesters. Haha.

It sounds like their kind of response and I think that may be where I heard that comment before. I have heard it somewhere. I don't really hear the compairison to NMH though.

swim 01-19-2007 04:22 PM

beirut @ bonnaroo!! wooooooo

Ornette 01-22-2007 06:35 AM

The first song on the new EP is great. So's most of Gulag Orkestar.

Tiago 06-23-2007 01:25 PM

Lon Gisland is amazing, so is Gulag Orkestar. Pompeii and Small Time American Bats, not so much. But it shows how his musicianship developed over the years.

So, new French pop record, eh?

What?

Sorry, I'm out of the loop.

Tiago 06-26-2007 09:50 AM

Zach has said that he has been listening to lots of French pop (the old one, not the horrible new commercial one), and has said that it inspired the new upcoming album. It has not title as of yet, but once was titled The Flying Club Cup. The Flying Club Cup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I think Zach will become the European Sufjan Stevens soon enough.

adidasss 06-26-2007 10:21 AM

But...he's not european....

Tiago 06-26-2007 01:18 PM

Yes, but he knows more European culture than most. And what I meant by European Sufjan Stevens was that he would put out albums inspired by European places/events/history/etc., just like Sufjan did with 2 states. (plz plz, let it be Oregon...)

adidasss 06-26-2007 02:01 PM

Why Oregon?

sleepy jack 06-26-2007 02:40 PM

Sufjan quit doing the states thing.

Tiago 06-26-2007 02:52 PM

He better not.

sleepy jack 06-26-2007 03:27 PM

Wait nvm, hes doing Oregon or Rhode Island next, and possibly Minnesota soon. His state songs are kind of lame because for the most part their very loosely tied to that state and could just as easily be related to another, but I guess thats the only way you can pull it off.

Tiago 06-26-2007 03:47 PM

Yes, let's hope he uses some good ol' psychadelia with orchestrated strings or piano ballads. =D

It's Beirut.

And yes, he's awesome.

adidasss 06-29-2007 12:51 PM

You're actually answering a question posed on 05-20-2006?

Ornette 09-06-2007 01:55 PM

It's cool. Just a continuation of Gulag, really.

TelApathy 09-07-2007 03:18 PM

is he Lebanese? Beirut is a place in Lebanon I believe.

Ornette 09-07-2007 10:12 PM

No, he's not.

pheurton 09-18-2007 11:22 AM

nantes is an awesome song.

=ladyface= 10-14-2007 05:31 AM

I'm just getting into him now. I really can't believe he's so young. He sounds like he's got a million years of experience in his music.

Elephant Gun is the song I'm digging at the moment. I think it's pretty uplifting (and not what I'd usually look for when I'm feeling great... I tend to go for Girls Aloud and the like when I need something that fits).
