Joanna Newsom

Anyone like? She plays the harp and sings, it sounds really good, 'Sadie' 'En Gallop' 'Casseopeia' or anything else from The Milk-Eyed Mender is cool. She has the most unusual voice, I'm not sure if I love it or if it grates on me. It's bizarre.

TheBig3 05-17-2005 07:45 AM

Yeah my friend sent me some of her stuff and I was sold on her playing a harp. However, when she started singing I honestly laughed out loud. She told me her voice grows on you, but its was just so comical I couldn't listen anymore. It reminds me of someone, sorta of like the NY underground indie acts that like to posture alot and make up stupid voices for themselves, but much much worse.

The music is beautiful, the lyrics are pretty good, however the voice is unbareable. She keeps it at a reasonable tone for short periods of time, but not long enough. I don't know if the voice will "grow on me".

amen

MoonlitSunshine 07-18-2006 09:25 AM

It does. Or at least that's whiat I've found. Once you start listening to the actual lyrics it's crazy.

Strummer521 01-14-2007 02:08 PM

I think her voice is epic. It's child-like, and yet it navigates her complex melodic twists and turns with skill, and almost wisdom. Another thing I find interesting is how similar parts of "Emily" are to Springsteen's "Spirit in the Night" in terms of melody. I wonder if she's aware of this. I'm kind of disappointed to see there's no one around here that's as impressed with her as I am.

Also: If you have itunes...check out the podcast of NPR's All Songs Considered, in which Boileen interviews her and lets her choose some of the songs that are played. She's extremely articulate in a way that most muscians really aren't.

svetlana sucked lemons across from me, and i am progressing abominably

She does sound like a disabled child, YET its so alluring, im a fan, albeit of 4 songs ive heard.

What a woman.

sleepy jack 01-14-2007 06:43 PM

I either really like her voice, or really dislike it. Ys is amazing.

just listened to cosmia off ys it came with an uncut cd. her voice was at one point so high pitched and squeaked it freaked me and i nearly crashed my car. i was trippin though

Ornette 01-22-2007 06:58 AM

Ys is really good. So's Milk Eyed Mender, but it's not at the level that Ys is.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-22-2007 11:12 AM

By about 3 minutes into the first song I wanted to hurl the CD at the wall her voice was so grating.

Then I realised I didn`t own the CD because I downloaded it so I used the cat instead.

Alo 01-22-2007 01:55 PM

^ About the same story.

Though I can imagine that there are people (besides animal lovers) that would leave the cat alone, and would be able to enjoy the album...

PETA loves you.

dormouse 01-25-2007 05:22 PM

I like Ys, but I can never listen to the whole thing through. I have to take each song individually to really enjoy it. "Cosmia" is one of my favorite songs from this year. I just got Milk-Eyed Mender, and it's much more possible to listen to as whole album. I also found some live recordings of her with Devendra Banhart, but the quality isn't very good.

What's weird is that I disliked her when I first heard her, but I knew that I would grow into her. Once I knew when her voice was going to do all of it's jumping around, it lost its "grating" quality and became soothing. An odd phenomenon, I don't know if anyone else knows what I mean.

sleepy jack 02-02-2007 09:13 PM

I'm full on infatuated with her voice.

swim 02-02-2007 09:16 PM

What album should I check out first?

sleepy jack 02-02-2007 09:17 PM

Ys, I can up it for you.

swim 02-02-2007 09:19 PM

I found a link.
Ys

Sneer 02-02-2007 09:23 PM

temporariy unavailable

swim 02-02-2007 09:24 PM

That means the link works you just can't use it at that moment. Sometimes megaupload is ghey like that.

sleepy jack 02-02-2007 09:32 PM

I can't get over how enchanting? or hypnotic, (I can't decide between those words) this album is.

Laces Out Dan! 02-02-2007 10:02 PM

I listened to that song you sent me and it was like i was stuck in a disney movie for 3 minutes.

MoonlitSunshine 02-03-2007 11:26 AM

Milk Eyed Mender is way better then Ys, especially live...

swim 02-03-2007 11:29 AM

Hey. Where you been?

I like Ys so I'll probably get anything and everything else aswell.

MoonlitSunshine 02-03-2007 11:31 AM

Me? Oh, I got distracted by life and impending exams..

IndieShotYou 05-01-2007 02:43 PM

Joanna Newsom

I couldn't find a thread so I decided to start one. I thought Ys. was one of the most majestic albums ever and the Milk-Eyed Mender is also quite fantastic.

sleepy jack 05-01-2007 03:10 PM

I need to check out Milk Eyed Mender, I had it awhile ago and didn't like it then my friend made me listen to Ys and I thought it was okay. Now I listen to it almost every night while im getting ready for bed/going to sleep.

figure8 05-01-2007 11:24 PM

I consider her a poet.

=ladyface= 10-08-2007 12:02 PM

I think there's something quite special about Joanna Newsom. When I first heard her music I found her voice really odd but I couldn't stop listening.

It's strange to hear her vocals change from a couple of songs on Walnut Whales to The Milk-Eyed Mender to Ys. They seem more exaggerated now that they did in the beginning. I don't think that's a bad thing, though.

My favourite Joanna Newsom song is Sprout And The Bean by miles.

mermaid 10-12-2007 08:34 PM

Her voice turned me off at first. but then I found myself wanting to listen to more and eventually I became hooked. She's sooooo good, I really love the Walnut Whales EP.
