This song is great traditional country music. It has a great driving rhythm and awe storytelling by Johnny Cash. The lead guitar adds so much as Carl Perkins tended to do back in his day, and really gives this song a great feel. One of Cash's best.

That is a great song. The lyrics are really funny but I love how underneath it there's a strange sense of sadness.

What else would you expect from the Cash man?

FaSho 02-22-2009 04:43 PM

One Piece At A Time is definatley my favorite when it omes don to it, Idiscuss this with my Dad almost regularly, and He has tons of great song sbut it always stuck out to me as the catchiest and most fun, sure he has better serious songs, but a lot of times I just want something funny and fun to listen to.

GuitarMan 03-03-2009 09:46 AM

Definitely Hurt. Trent Reznor even said he made that song his own.

scottsy 03-07-2009 11:27 PM

Cash made some pretty kick ass covers in his time, that is for sure! The guy knew how to takje a dirgey nineties song and totally own it... You gotta give him props for that!

Zarko 03-08-2009 08:14 AM

Folsom Prison Blues
Cocaine Blues
One Piece at a Time

Whitechapelfan200 03-08-2009 12:21 PM

I don't really listen to him but I have heard some of his songs. If I had to choose I would say that ring of fire is his best song though.

Darkest Hour 03-13-2009 10:16 PM

hurt, i'm not a huge fan, but that song is great

LoathsomePete 03-13-2009 10:47 PM

Wayfaring Stranger off American III... such a powerful way to end the album.

I've gotta go with "One Piece at A Time" as far as I know, that was the first song to utilize the term "psychobilly" the video with June Carter (see below) is classic, his entire catalog is of course fantastic, but this one's always had a special place in my heart.

Dig the video;

I really like her version (along with pretty much her entire catalogue) but I think Strawfoot do the best cover.

scottsy 09-30-2009 09:28 PM

I still can't go past Ring of Fire.... I know it's probably pretty cliche of me, but it's just such a darn good song!

Plus is cover of Rusty Cage by Soundgarden.... timeless!

therion 10-01-2009 02:59 AM

yes the name is hurt. it`s very depressing it`s like he is going to be dead and looking back to his life.

lars 10-22-2009 03:50 PM

Even though this song is popular.. I still love it because it got me into johnny cash..
"A boy named sue"!

joderu95 03-25-2010 05:58 PM

Close call for me with Belshazzar, Long Black Veil, Folsom Prison Blues and Hey Porter.

Insane Guest 03-25-2010 06:04 PM

The obvious "Walk the Line", fun to play with and sing, it's a great song. The cover of Hurt is also very good, it puts me down though.

iron9567 03-30-2010 03:33 PM

Im a big fan of the work The man in black brought us. To be able to pick a song over the others would be difficult to do. I like every song just the same.
thanks
the iron man

That was actually quite the cool movie... I remember watching it on the plane from Australia to the US... I really got into it, I must admit.

Stinkfist 05-02-2010 01:45 AM

3. Walk The Line
2. A boy named sue
1. Hurt. Sorry NIN but the man in black made this his own

Landon 05-09-2010 04:01 PM

There are so many I love it's hard to pick one!
If I had to choose one maybe "Streets of Laredo" or "Redemption Song" (with Joe Strummer)

Necromancer 05-10-2010 10:33 PM

A Boy Named Sue

Its got to be 'My name is Sue, how do you do', god..I remember that song back when I was very young, whats so amazing about it is Im so damn old now. I always liked the line "and he bit off a piece of my ear", isnt that morbid for a young kid to hear. I sure dont want my son walking around singing that paticular tune alot. That song has to be close to around 50 years old..., old as dirt.

Love-song 02-07-2011 09:10 PM

...I love Johnny's version of...

I Love You Because

I Love You for a hundred thousand reasons...
...but most of all...I Love You ‘cause You’re You

Howard the Duck 02-09-2011 06:41 AM

Folsom Prison Blues

I too first heard it when I was a young kid at school. We loved it. kids do love that sort of thing. We'd go round singing the words, giving special attention to the phrases like "kicking and a'gouging in the mud, blood and beer" and "some guy would laugh and I'd bust his head" and "I busted a chair right across his teeth".
No, we didn't grow up to be serial killers. It was just fun, same as we'd play 'daleks' after watching Dr Who.

Actually, this was the first time I ever heard Johnny Cash, or country music for that matter. At the time we weren't aware of there being different genres. There was just what we heard on the radio. What was in the charts. And at that time there weren't genre-specific charts. All different types of music just bumbled together in the one chart.

That album, the San Quentin album, or to be precise, the TV documentary, was what started me off as a country music fan. So I owe a great deal to Johnny Cash. I've been a fan of his ever since those far-off days.

But I wouldn't say Boy Named Sue is my favourite Johnny Cash song. I dont have a favourite. How could I? How could anybody? Your musical tastes change with your moods. I'm enjoying reminiscing about my childhood but tomorrow I'll feel completely different and what moves me then will be different too. Lets just say I love all of his work. They're all my favourites.

Moshe 02-26-2011 09:57 AM

Folsom Prison Blues is my fave, but also Big River. And his version of Sunday Morning Comming Down is easilly the best.
I also liked the Johnny Cash Remixed album. I don't usually go for that sort of thing, and I would always prefer the unmolested Cash original, but I found some of the remixes give an original & refreshing take on some of these classic tracks

CRAZY-HORSE 03-14-2011 11:59 PM

i dont understand how can anyone say one JC song stands above a hundred others??? he's written and/or sung so many great songs...picking one solitary track is like picking out one Beatles track or a single Elvis track...impossible

The Virgin 03-18-2011 06:55 AM

For me, it's Hurt.

Bulldog 03-18-2011 03:22 PM

I've been listening to the American series like a crazy person lately, so this is my favourite at the minute;

And I actually know a fella called Sam Hall as well.

Moshe 03-18-2011 03:59 PM

Yep, Sam Hall is a kicking track. One of my faves off the American recordings series

Thorby Bislam 03-19-2011 01:11 PM

Johnny first recorded this song on Ballads of the True West back in the mid-sixties.

Tisimia 03-19-2015 04:40 PM

Walk the line & Hurt

GrapeApe 03-23-2015 07:44 AM

So many to choose from, but honestly it has to be
Legend of John Henry's Hammer. I like the build up
and the story. Of course every Johnny Cash song has
an awesome story.

Hitsville UK 03-29-2015 04:03 PM

Near enough an impossible task, but my favourites (at the moment) are Walk the line and Folsom Prison blues. To be honest there aren't many JC songs I don't like.
