I’m not good at categorizing songs into classifications listed on MUSIC BANTER so this is only a stab in the dark. Having just listened to all of this I realise most of it sure isn’t anything like Country or Folk. Sorry Kiddies.

Always good to see John Martyn represented on Music Banter, Ayn, and this is as good a place as any to put his music - except that again, I'm afraid, there is already a thread dedicated to good old JM:- https://www.musicbanter.com/general-...hn-martyn.html

(I am a bit of a stickler about keeping MB in good order; I'd say that the majority of members probably care a lot less than I do about these things. None the less, I wonder if I might suggest the "search" function that appears on the top banner of the MB screen. It's not always helpful, though I find the results are much more useful when I use the "show posts" option which it offers.)

John Martyn certainly started out with folk music, but took a lot of liberties with its interpretation! Here's a guy with a more conventional approach who I imagine you've heard of: Lionel Long is not a particular favourite of mine, but he was good at conveying the beauty inherent in some old traditional songs:-

PS: as for recognizing genres of music, I found that I learnt an awful lot just by poking around on MB. In my head, I divide my musical education into two parts: before joining MB and after joining MB.

But who wrote the software for ’show posts’? This gets really complicated.

I also dread missing out on ‘crossover’ music by using such a facility.
I’m reminded of a recent argument over the two Album ‘Trio’ recording with Dolly Parton, Emmy Lou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. I was informed my description of their ‘Blue Train’ track as country meant I knew nothing about country. Maybe I don’t ? Strangly these questions have only reared their ugly head when I puzzle where to post certain music on the forum.

No wonder so many ‘mixes’ sound like someone sandpapering music to death.

I liked the simple set-up, and given that it was a dip into a collection of old singles, I didn't find the crackling of the grooves, full of wind-blown dust and i don't know what else, to be particularly distracting. Nice music, nice shots from the ceiling, though i wish the guy had held the record sleeves up over his head so that we could get a decent look at them.

Zero idea about the MB software, Ayn.

Yes, everyone struggles a bit about putting music in the appropriate category; with many artists/pieces of music there is no "right answer". I always think about MB that enthusiasm for music is more important than expert knowledge, so someone who says "you know nothing about country" is being pretty unhelpful in my opinion.
