As a young musician growing up in Port Sudan in the early 1990s,
Noori Jaber fortuitously stumbled across the neck of a well-preserved guitar
near a junkyard.
After being gifted a tambour – a four-stringed lyre also known as the krar
– by his father, the 18-year-old Noori forged it with the salvaged guitar
using his own welding and tuning technique to craft an electrified tambo-guitar.
Vieux spent two years making 'Les Racines' but the album
had been gestating in his mind even longer.
Recorded in Bamako in Vieux's home studio, the timeless grooves of the album
are steeped in the traditional music of West Africa.
But the fire of Vieux's guitar playing and the urgency of the messages in his songs add an entirely contemporary relevance.
