^ Thanks Marie.

I can't remember how I first came across Bes. If it was from you, or someone else on MB, and I have failed to give them credit, then my apologies.
But yeah, a great album, although their other ones didn't seem so good to me; they didn't have so much of that off-kilter, off-genre thing going on, I thought.

Souren Baronian - The Middle Eastern Soul of Carlee Records (2022)

Quote:

The Middle Eastern Soul of Carlee Records collects the early works of Baronian who's probably best known as a key contributor on John Berberian's Middle Eastern Rock. This set includes his early 50s work with the Nor-Ikes, and his early 70s albums Hye Inspiration and Middle Eastern Soul. This monster is a barrage of middle eastern clarinet, oud, dumbek, kanun, sax, tambourine, wild percussion, and kaval, along with finger cymbals and the occasional vocal from some of his favorite belly dancers. Still performing at 91 with his group Taksim, Souren Baronian is a living legend and he was nice enough to let us raid his tape archive!
10/10

Amidal Tribe

Quote:

The Amidal Tribe is located in the East New Britain Province of Papua New Guinea and forms the second largest Island of the 600 New Guinea island nation.

The Tribe is the largest in the East New Britain Province and have been playing music since 1930s which was influenced by Jazz.

This is the very first video clip of the group, recorded in July of 2008. As the clip depicts they live on the rim of fire being surrounded by twelve active volcanoes. They maintain that the ocean wrote the song, telling the story of the sinking of a Spanish fleet in the 1700s that were intent on occupying New Britain. Out of no where a huge storm erupted sinking the entire fleet. The sinking of the fleet is a recorded historical fact.

Tănase has a similar importance in Romania as Édith Piaf in France or Amália Rodrigues in Portugal.

We are klezmer, that’s why we mainly improvise, constantly looking for something new, also in ourselves. Improvisation is a gate through which the worlds of our souls go straight to those who want to explore these worlds. We want our music to be simply called the Kroke music.
Kroke - Wspomnienie dziecinstwa (Poland)

Thanks to Safar and Psy-Fi for continued explorations of world music. However, this thread does say "Country, Folk and World", and I'd like to share something from the country/folk end of the spectrum.
Iris DeMent won't be a new name to many of us, but I was struck this morning by how good this song is; a bit of down-home wisdom, sweetly delivered:-

I also like that she takes as her starting point the same questions that were nagging at Gauguin when he painted his famous "Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?":

If Gauguin had taken an Iris DeMent album to Tahiti, he would've had a ready answer to his own questions.

Various Artists - Padang Moonrise: The Birth of the Modern Indonesian Recording Industry (1955-69)

Quote:

Padang Moonrise is the story of modern Indonesian music that emerged underneath the volcanoes of Java and Sumatra. Java, the most populous island in the archipelago of over 17,000 islands and 1300 distinct ethnic groups, and its capital city Jakarta, was where most of the post-colonial national identity, politics, administration and music production was centred.

Traditional songs from Java, Sumatra, Bali and beyond were re-imagined by a small group of state-sponsored musicians that also composed and arranged new music. These songs aimed at consolidating a geographically disparate country with a new language and new ideas of national character. This compilation brings together a handful of these recordings that combine elements of regional popular music, Islamic Gambus, Javanese & Balinese Gamelan and Kroncong, with jazz, Afro-latin music & instrumentation, and vocal harmonies influenced by banned American doo-wop and rock & roll.

The results are a unique blend of styles that have remained mostly insulated from the world outside of Indonesia until a recent worldwide resurgence in the interest of recorded music of all forms has shone a new light on these nearly forgotten recordings.
