Well... I'm not sure if the musicians themselves are "conscientiously obscure" because I can't read minds or whether or not they want to be. As for us... we're just exploring a sub-genre of folk. Being a huge fan of the Velvet Underground, I thought that avant/experimental folk would be a decent genre to look into. But whatever floats your boat.

Isn't it possible that appearing 'conscientiously obscure' is just the result of trying to push the limits of the familiar? And isn't that quite like challenging clichés, myths (etc), as TheBig3 recommends?

Default Country Newbie

Hi,

I am an 18 year old living in the UK who is in need of some recommendations.
Basically a year or so ago now i went to the cinema and fell in love with a film called Crazy Heart and in turn its soundtrack. Since then i have been listening to the album often in addition to some other such as Seasick Steve however i have a severe lack of country music to hand so i was wondering if anyone could recommend any for me.

The Crazy Heart soundtrack is the best example of what i like, with slightly what i think is more modern, faster music however i do also appreciate slow songs (with Ryan Bingham's The Weary Kind, being my favorite song of all time). I have been reccomended William Elliot Whitmore but any help you could give would be great.

Regards,
Michael Glynn

Hi Michael
If you liked Crazy Heart I would also recommend the Country Strong soundtrack. An excelent selection of country artistes. The movie is good too, Gwyneth Paltrow makes a very beleivable & compelling country star.

The music in Crazy heart reminded me of the type of stuff Waylon Jennings used to do. So check out waylon Jennings *& the other outlaws of the seventies.

An excelent new album I would recomment is "Stronger" by Sara evans. Both uptempo & slower tunes on there. If you were to download just one track from it i'd recommend "Ticket To ride".

Back to Waylon- check out "Don't You think this outlaw bit's done got out of hand" & "Are you sure hank done it this way"
You might also like David allan coe "Longhaired redneck" & "Willie, waylon & Me"

Thank you very much, I'll have a listen through those after the F1

In the mean time are there any other artists you would recommend just generally for a new person to get into, for example I don't think Taylor swift is all that bad considering I'm hardly in the target audience.P

Thanks again.

I think taylor Swift is developing as an increasingly good songwriter.

Carrie underwood is one of the hot young country singers. This duet at the ACM's with Steven Tyler is an entertaining example of rock meets country

Toby Keith is often entertaining
