A New Turkish Song Everyday

Hello people. I decided to share some Turkish artists and their works here :) I'll share some now, and then I'll share one everyday, with some explanations.

I hope you like them.
Have a nice day/night, whichever timezone you're in :)

Janszoon 08-17-2012 04:19 PM

I'm excited to hear some! I think I literally only know one Turkish musician at the moment. :)

simpleman 08-17-2012 04:26 PM

I'll start with the last Eurovision contest song of Turkey. Artist is 'Can Bonomo', and the title is 'Love Me Back'. He used some old, classic Turkish elements in both the video and the song. Language is English, but the structure of the song, and the instruments used includes some typical classical Northwestern Turkish incluences. Enjoy :)

Oh, by the way, I cannot share or embed URLs before my first 15 posts. So I'll copy the link. Have fun :)

simpleman 08-17-2012 04:28 PM

I'm really excited to hear that :) My first 15 posts will be boring, maybe because of the prohibition on embedding hehe :)

Janszoon 08-17-2012 04:30 PM

You don't have to embed URLs to post YouTube videos. Just use the little "YouTube" button and put the little YouTube video number in between the tags. Just quote your own post here to see how I edited it.

simpleman 08-17-2012 04:31 PM

Ah, thank you :) glad that I learned that :)

simpleman 08-17-2012 04:56 PM

I enjoy Mogollar, Baris Manco etc. They are the golden artists of an era according to some relatively elder people here, for example my parents hehe :)
Also I love taksim, fasil, kanto and kinda classical styles like them. But usually, I do not stick to just some genre or style. In time, I will try to share all that you mentioned, and many more here :) I want to introduce Turkish artists and music that are not usually familiar to the world. I hope you enjoy them.

By the way, I am sorry for my bad English :)

simpleman 08-17-2012 05:14 PM

Thank you :)

I have to tell this, the songs I share here are not my own selection or TOP X list. I am just sharing some random artists that are popular in their own styles, and that I respect, from different genres in Turkey.

So, let's move on :)

Now, I'm going to introduce you a group called 'Model'. I will share two songs of them. They are very popular nowadays among alternative youth.

First one is called 'Buzdan Sato', means 'The Ice Castle'.
and next one, is called 'Pembe Mezarlik', means 'The Pink Cemetery'.
Enjoy :)

simpleman 08-17-2012 05:30 PM

And our third artist is a funny guy, 'Beduk'. He's an electronica artist :) has some nice videos :) And he usually uses English as the language in his tracks. I'll share 2 of his songs :)

First song is called 'Better Than My Baby'. I really like this video and the song :)

And the other one is called 'Automatik'. I think this is a nice video idea :)
There are some 90's Turkish clichés in the video :) and also some hilarious dances haha :)

Hope you like them :)

simpleman 08-17-2012 05:51 PM

Here we continue with 'Sila', very popular nowadays, with her emotional, classical influenced songs :) I have to tell that when I say 'classical', I refer to 'classical Turkish'.

I love this one. I wish I had the English to translate the lyrics, with the exact same meanings and emotions :)

Here you go :)

simpleman 08-17-2012 06:07 PM

And todays final video :) This one was made in respect to 'Playing for Change' crew and people. This one is called 'Doga Icin Cal', means 'Play for Nature'. You are going to listen 3 very well known -here- old Turkish tunes. You will see lots of classical Turkish instruments, as well as some other well known ones, professional and mostly amateur artists

Again, its nice to be here :) Starting tomorrow, I will post one tune per day. I hope you enjoy these.

Enjoy :) Good night. (for me :))

Lisnaholic 08-18-2012 10:15 PM

Welcome to MB, simpleman ! This thread is a great chance for us to learn about Turkish music. Thanks. :)

simpleman 08-19-2012 06:54 PM

Thank you :) I'm glad that you like it. Today's artist is Tarkan. He's a Turkish pop artist, and he's well known in some other countries. I'll add 3 songs of him, first two are new songs from his latest albums, and the last one is a relatively older, very vell known song :)

First song is called 'Öp', means 'Kiss'.

Second one is called 'Ask Gitti Bizden', means 'Love is gone from us' or maybe 'Love left us'. :)

And the last one is an older song of him, called 'Dudu'. I don't know the exact meaning of the word, it's not very common :) but here, I can tell that it's used as 'nice', 'good' or something like that. Okay lets go for the song :)

simpleman 08-23-2012 01:35 PM

Some days I can't post here, so today I'm here again with 3 songs :) First 2 of them are from a pop artist called 'Yalin'. He has a softer style and voice, usually emotional lyrics, and has lots of fans here. Not one of my personal favorites but, he's worth listening. And the third one is a work of an alternative group called 'Manga', and a female pop artist 'Goksel'. I think this one is a nice song :)

Yalin - 'Kasma', means something like 'take it easy'. Enjoy :)

Yalin - 'Keske', means 'I wish'.

Manga / Goksel - 'Dursun Zaman', means like 'let the time stop' or something.

Hope you enjoy them :)

simpleman 08-23-2012 02:02 PM

Here's a bonus for you :)

Performed by Selim Sesler, a Turkish Romani/gypsy from Kesan/Edirne, the ancient 'Thrace', land of the Spartacus :) He's one of the best clarinet artists in Turkey, actually his works are widely known in Europe and some parts of the world.

And here is that fine and delicate piece of Turkish Romani/gypsy culture, by Selim Sesler, his orchestra, and Brenna MacCrimmon, who is a Canadian folk singer from Toronto, Ontario, who has been performing, studying and teaching Balkan and Turkish music since the late 1980s. If I'm not wrong, she plays the 'baglama' in this song.

Enjoy :)

Ilovemusic81 09-03-2012 05:33 PM

This is different ;-)

simpleman 09-04-2012 07:00 PM

Thank you :) I'm glad to hear that you like :)
You can always tell me what style you want to hear, old or new, and also you can ask any questions about the songs, culture, instruments etc.

I haven't been able to post for some time because of some business trips. Today I'll post three songs :)

First one is a video from a movie called 'Crossing the Bridge'. In this scene, Brenna MacCrimmon, a Canadian folk singer, is singing a Turkish song with 'Baba Zula', a Turkish alternative band that produces some folk, alternative and kinda psychadelic music using modern and old instruments, and also some ancient Turkish accessories :) This song is a different version of a Turkish sad folk song.
Here you go :)

The second song is in English, performed by Sertab Erener, a former Turkish Eurovision contestant. It's a pop song, and it was one of her candidate songs for Eurovision. You can see some Turkish ancient cultural elements in the video of the song.
Enjoy :)

And the last one, one of my favorites. This is from a concert of Sebnem Ferah, she's a rock artist, and this song does not sound like her usual style, very different and interesting. There's also an orchestra playing at the concert. Name of the song is Sil Bastan', means something like 'Start over'. She has a nice voice :) Enjoy :)

I hope you like them :)
Cheers

simpleman 09-05-2012 12:46 PM

Hello people :) Today, first, you'll hear some delicious clarinet again. Clarinet has a very important place in most ethnic Turkish music, especially in Northwestern Turkish culture.

I'll post 2 songs of an artist called 'Kirpi', means 'Porcupine' :) He produces mostly ethnic/electronic music, and he plays the clarinet.

I truly love his works. Both of these tracks that I'm going to post are in Buddha Bar compilations, and Kirpi is a well known artist in some countries other than Turkey. Actually he's known by more people out of Turkey :)

First song is called 'The Song'. Enjoy :)

And the second song is called 'My Name is Kirpi' :)

Hope you like them :)
Peace :)

simpleman 09-05-2012 12:52 PM

And today, I'm going to post 2 more songs, because I won't be able to be online in 1-2 days :)

First artist is 'Ayse Hatun Onal'. She used to be an actress and model, later she started to sing, and she released some nice electronica tunes :)

Name of the song is 'Kalbe Ben'. Exact translation is hard, because this is half a sentence :) so it is something like 'Me to your heart' :)

And next song is from a hip-hop artist, 'Ege Cubukcu'.
Name of the song is 'Party Istanbul'

Cheers :)

Lisnaholic 09-10-2012 09:50 AM

Hi, simpleman !
Maybe you don`t get many comments in this thread, but so far you have received 390 "views", so plenty of people are checking out the songs you`re posting. I haven`t listened to them all, but I thought you might like to hear someone`s opinion about a few of the artists you have chosen :-

post 21: Kirpi : I would`ve liked it more without the electronic beats.

post 15: Tarkan : Thanks to MTV, this song became quite popular in Mexico:

It`s clever the way the hook in this song is the international  sound, so that anyone in the world can join in for those few seconds at least.

post 20: Crossing The Bridge : I guess this is rather diluted Turkish music, but I enjoyed it anyway.

post 17: Selim Sesler : A great track ; I have a cd of Romanian Gypsy music, but this guy is much better.

post 22: Kalbe Ben : This sounded special to me, but maybe that was because of the video.

post 13: Play For Nature : This one is easily my favourite so far. I love the way it celebrates ordinary Turkish people, shows us some everday glimpses of Turkey and has a gentle start. But then, at about 2:20, it starts to change and just gets stronger and stronger until the end. Wonderful !

Thanks again for posting some very interesting music !

misspoptart 01-04-2013 02:59 AM

Hey all, this thread hasn't gotten much attention from the OP, but I'm happy to pick up where he left off.

My boyfriend is from the Muğla region of Turkey, where this song (and dance) is gold. All young men and women from the area learn the Kerimoğlu dance and song, although there are a variety of versions. I'm told this is one of the best on youtube, but feel free to disagree!

The song's lyrics are about the changes in the landscape, flora, and fauna...the old wise men and the deer have left the mountains. :(

That's enough traditional stuff for now, although I have plenty more where that came from if anyone is interested.

Here's a super popular pop-dance song that you can hear everywhere in Turkey at the moment... I believe the melody is sampled/copied from something, but not sure what. Let me know if you know.

Gökçe is an extremely famous pop star in Turkey. I like the horn sounds in this track, and also the catchy fast lyrics. The song is about having one's heart thrown back and forth...being lied to, etc.
Enjoy!

misspoptart 01-09-2013 01:48 AM

Hi all, I guess this thread is not the most popular thing ever, but maybe someone will enjoy this lovely/uber popular track by Duman, which means "smoke" in Turkish.

The song is called "Senden Daha Güzel," which translates to "More Beautiful Than You"--but strangely, the song is all about how nothing is more beautiful than you. The bank is grungy for Turkey, IMHO, so if you're interested, they do have darker stuff floating around.

Enjoy!

misspoptart 01-11-2013 04:03 AM

Here's another Turkish classic for ya'll. Every Turkish person knows this song, and it is incredibly erotic/romantic. It paints a very nice picture of how liberal Turkey was in those days (1975).

ENJOY! I adore this song, and I think Semiha is so beautiful!

"Seninle Bir Dakika" - "One Minute With You"

Rock N' Roll Clown 01-23-2013 02:20 PM

Here's my favorite Turkish song. A truly great ballad.

What do you think of Ismail YK, simpleman? He's one of my favorite Turkish artists. And, also, what about İbrahim Tatlıses (for me he's the greatest)

Baraba 02-01-2013 06:14 PM

I see, you are interested in ethnic music, so you may be interested to take a look at the Ethnocloud website too. Just google it. Unfortunately, I saw only one band there playing Turkish music, but there are lots of very good Balkan groups.

misspoptart 02-17-2013 10:35 AM

Hihi. This is not a new song, but it's by another crazy/random (crandom) Turkish pop star. He's short and annoying, but this song is very sexy. I love it when he says "Soup air, soup air".

HA. Video is also creepy. Anyway, give it a try.

misspoptart 06-26-2013 06:46 AM

Looking pretty empty in here, but hey, what the hell.

This song has gotten super popular in the past few weeks. I'm hearing it at every bar, café, convenience store, night club, whatever. So have a listen:

Worth the hype? I think not. The song title, Yatcaz Kalkcaz Ordayım, means "go to bed, get up, I'm there."

What do you think?

It's pretty catchy and I get why it's all over the place.

There is something odd sonically about the chorus though. It seems a bit off.

misspoptart 06-26-2013 07:35 AM

Everything is dance with weird melodies these days. Turks love singing along to everything, so this one will be around for a while. What do you mean about the chorus? Is it about her voice? It's been a bit synthed, hasn't it...

djchameleon 06-26-2013 07:41 AM

It's the pause that happens during the chorus. It seems kind of weird and messes with the flow of catchiness. Maybe it fits for what she is saying but meh. I don't like the way it sounds. What is she saying during the chorus anyways?

misspoptart 06-26-2013 07:51 AM

It's something to the effect of "go to bed, wake up, repeat" -- she's singing about a breakup where her life has become meaningless and routine. Ehhh...don't think it makes it any better really. :) Thanks for the feedback. I should be posting more Turkish music but I never really got into the pop scene here. I prefer traditional songs honestly. :)

And every damn Turkish pop song sounds the same to me...it's always got traditional instruments remixed to be as nightclub-appropriate as possible. :\

simpleman 06-28-2013 06:23 AM

Hello people :) I've been away for a long time from this forum and this topic because of some business reasons, but I'm back now :)

It's great to see that you people -especially misspoptart- took the topic where I left off.

I'll post some songs soon, after a long pause :)

Cheers everyone!

misspoptart 06-28-2013 07:20 AM

Yay!!!!!!

simpleman 07-02-2013 04:04 AM

So people, I feel like I should start posting some more songs now :)

Today I'll first post a song of 'Koray Candemir'. He used to be the lead singer of a famous Turkish rock band 'Kargo' until 2008. He did some solo stuff afterwards, and also some collaborations with other bands and musicians. I think he is a great guy, not only because of his nice music, but also his charity works etc.

The song is called 'Nefesini Tut', it means 'Hold Your Breath'. This is from his solo album. Sorry for the low quality video and the sound, but it was the best I could find on Youtube with both video clip and song together :) So, enjoy.

Here is another song of him, again from his solo album. I really like this one. The song is called 'İcini Dok', and it has a meaning of -as used in the song- something like 'pour out your heart'.

Now, this third song is from a duo called 'Oyku & Berk'. They are siblings, and have an interesting style. They usually mix arabesque songs with mediterraenean / flamenco style. I am not a fan of arabesque music, but I like mediterraenean styles so much, so I enjoy listening to their music. This song below, is originally belongs to 'Ibrahim Tatlises'. But I think this version is way better than the original one. Here you go;

And finally, here is a bonus for you guys :) I just found this, and it's a new song from the Turkish electro-pop artist 'Beduk'. The song is called 'It's a Riot' and they made the music video using the footage from June 2013 protests in Turkey.

---

I hope you like the songs :) cheers everyone :wavey:

misspoptart 11-11-2014 08:32 AM

Want to share this amazing and touching song by a local Istanbul band, Pinhani. I'll admit that some of their youtube stuff is a bit low-key and soft, but they are freaking awesome live and can rock a good night venue like no other band I've seen here.

The music video is especially great because the band members (and many others) are doing sign language so that it's just a bit more universal than Turkish would normally lend itself to be. Give it a look. :)

Lisnaholic 11-12-2014 10:59 AM

Good bump on this thread, misspoptart! By chance, it turned up a song that I was thinking of hunting for, so you´ve just saved me some tedious searching. Thanks.

I was intrigued by your comment about Pinhani, and found this live clip, which bears out what you say :-

I suppose Simpleman got bored and moved on, so it´ll be nice if you add a song here once in a while - keep us posted on what´s cool in Istanbul.

misspoptart 11-12-2014 12:12 PM

Hahah, I was probably at that concert! I love it when they do this song!!! Bana hediyeeeeeeeeeeee! If I was there I'd be dancing madcore :)

I'll try to post more frequently, I'm a bit out of touch with Turkish music lately. ^_^

grindy 11-12-2014 02:07 PM

Lisnaholic 11-13-2014 07:09 PM

^ Wow, Grindy, that is a great piece of music! I´ve just downloaded the ten tracks I could find of the album, and I am enjoying them while I write this note of grateful thanks. Hints of traditional music overlaid with jazzy musical invention; I´m loving it - and I´m hoping you´ll stay around to swap more recommendations!

@missP : you were at that concert? That´s great! I presume Bana Hediye is a crowd favourite, then? I was going to check out some more of Pinhani´s live material, but as you see, I´ve just dropped everything in favour of Grindy´s recommendation! :o:

misspoptart 11-26-2014 01:48 AM

Here's another song sung by Pinhani, but this one is an old folk song. I just really love this version of it. :)
