Vote for a FAIR album before April 30

Every two weeks the Folk And International Roots Album Club votes for an album that they will listen to and discuss in the coming weeks.
Anyone can vote in this poll, but if you vote, please follow through and be ready to discuss whichever album wins the poll.

Six albums to choose from this week, thanks to stp who comes bouncing back with two nominations.

Sainkho Namtchylak & Ned Rothenberg - Amulet

Beautiful album consisting of saxophone (bass, I believe) and vocals from two musicians who truly know their instrument. It goes through an amazing field of textures in so little time and the two really complement one another.

Pianoriental by Maurice El Medioni (2000)

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/50...anoriental.jpg

This accomplished piano player learned his trade in the bars of Algeria during the Second World War, but it seems that he didn´t record anything until this century. So although this album has a modern date, it preserves a spirit from about 75 years ago. With a slightly dated sound and a sophisticated blend of styles, it´s easy to conjure up visions from the movie Casablanca as you listen to this virtuoso playing.

On this link, you can hear the whole album. (If that´s too much to take in all at once, take a break and go back another day; this album is a slow grower imo.)

Kath Bloom & Loren MazzaCane Connors - Restless Faithful Desperate & Moonlight

Some beautiful folk from an improvisational guitarist and a female folk singer. This is a two disc album that contains the first two albums of this duo. The songs are hauntingly emotional, mostly because of Bloom's vocals. Connors plays some good and somewhat noodly backgrounds to these songs that complement Bloom's style very well. I don't know if Connors is improvising or not, but it's a stunning product either way.

I nominate Niyaz's first album, the self-titled Niyaz. Great Persian flavor, although some songs are in Turkish also.

I think this is one of the best songs on the album. Enjoy.

I've been debating putting this one up for a while mainly because it is of more a classical bent but I figure you can't get much more international folk than medieval French troubadours.

Heliotrope - The Romance of the Rose (Feminine Voices from Medieval France) 1995

While the songs were sourced from 13th century texts the actual melodies on these recordings were kind of educated guesses as there was little musical notation from the period.

Fifth album from Brazilian Milton Nascimento. Well technically it's a collective effort of "The Corner Club".

(Video features entire album apparently)

Thanks as always to the people who make the effort to share their enthusiasm for FAIR music here.
:)
As well as casting a vote this week, it´d be nice to know if you think anything should be put on LAST CHANCE in the next poll.

misspoptart 04-25-2013 03:38 AM

Let's last chance heliotrope. :)

 Thanks for your input, misspoptart ! We can´t Last Chance Heliotrope unless it´s been clogging up the polls for a while - do you really think it´s so terrible ?
Also, tbh, we don´t usually vote for our own nominations. Doesn´t anything else appeal to you ? If you like I´ll vote for Niyaz to give it a decent chance, while you could watch how the poll works out and re-cast your vote somewhere else.

BTW, did you ever try Right-Track´s Latcho Drom movie ? I´d love to know what you think of it. I´ve watched/listened to it a couple of times, but even though I like it, after half an hour I feel as if I´ve had enough.
Here´s a link to your own thread. It´s like being served with a summons -now you´ve got no excuse :-

Hahaha oh! Did I vote for my own entry?? :o:

I'm sorry, that is so tasteless of me!

I haven't watched the movie, and I know I've been asked to several times. I've been really busy for the past month, I can get to it on the next rainy day! :)

Aaaand I'll recast my vote to Kath Bloom and Loren Conners.

I do dislike heliotrope, but we could also last chance Sainkho/Rothenburg!

Lisnaholic 04-26-2013 07:49 AM

OK, Miss P, I hope you´re busy in a good way and are not too stressed out. I wouldn´t like the Latcho Drom to be the last straw that pushed you over the edge ....

I´m thinking that I´ll vote for the Kath Bloom on your behalf, and then your vote for Niyaz is on my behalf. That seems reasonable, doesn´t it ? Then all we need is for someone else to join the poll (ahem)!

PS. I´m going to check out that Sainkho/Rothenburg, because so far I´ve been voting for it without giving it a proper listen.

Lisnaholic 05-01-2013 05:08 PM

Ok, this poll has closed with misspoptart´s nomination of Niyaz as the winner. So on May 7th we´ll have a Niyaz thread and a new poll. That means we have a week to gather our thoughts about Niyaz and to dream up some new nominations. See you on one of those threads, I hope !
