The Nick Drake Appreciation Thread

Five Leaves Left is sublime
Bryter Layter is better than any orgasm any girl has given me
Pink Moon sends more chills down my spine than an arctic winter.

He`s rather good isn`t he

Sneer 06-22-2005 02:59 PM

rather good doesnt cover it. also rather tragic.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-22-2005 03:11 PM

I was being understated

davidMC1982 06-22-2005 03:15 PM

I've only listened to Five Leaves Left and Pink Moon but both are superb.

Dave

SATCHMO 06-22-2005 03:20 PM

I picked up Bryter Layter a couple of weeks ago. Its a great album. I like Northern Sky a lot.

Sweet Jane 06-23-2005 01:28 PM

Pink Moon is the only full album I have and it gives me goosebumps.

I have assorted mp3s including a nice Jackson C Frank cover 'Blues Run the Game,' and Aimee Mann, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith & Martin Sexton all singing 'River Man.'

Mogwai done a track called Nick Drake. It's beautiful also, check that out.

hookers with machineguns 12-02-2005 07:38 PM

I have to bump this. I'm living Nick Drake lately.

TheBig3 12-11-2005 05:44 PM

Im really glad Volkswagon chosse to put him in a comercial, otherwise he'd be still relativly unknown by a majority of people.

I pick up "one of these things first" off the garden state sound track, and I really enjoy this song. If you don't know anything, I'd say this isn't a bad place to start.

My loins yearn for Pink Moon. I need that album BAD. From what I hear, it's PURE Drake at his best.

Well I may be wrong coz I`ve not listened to it in a while (Damn computer:() But as far as I remember it`s his only acoustic only album.

Shooting Star 01-23-2006 04:33 PM

Nick Drake is effing brilliant. Five Leaves Left is my favourite album of his, the nice fine line between awesome string accompanyment and his own gentle guitar. Pink Moon is awesome too.

Magnum 01-24-2006 09:14 AM

An ad ????? Wow that is weird. He is fantastic. I have loved him for years. He is very well known in these shores, I have to say but keep spreading the word. "Time of no reply" is a must. Just him and his guitar. GET IT

either/or 01-25-2006 12:27 AM

pink moon is crazily good. and beck does a great cover of the song pink moon.

Shooting Star 01-25-2006 11:10 AM

'Tis a shame how he went. Very ironic to (debatable) kill yourself by overdosing on painkillers.

Magnum 01-26-2006 03:12 AM

Any body ever read the biography. Itis nicely written but very little is known about him full stop. It seems he didn't have many friends at all

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-26-2006 07:20 AM

His shyness was legendary , He used to do whole gigs without even looking or addressing the audience.

I remember watching an interview with his sister , She said one day he walked into her house with a copy of Five Leaves Left & she looked at it & said 'You sing ?'

Vismund Cygnus 01-27-2006 02:50 PM

I haven't listened to any of his music, but I have heard good things about it.

You like Elliott smith so it shouldn't be too much effort for you to appreciate Nick Drake. He's really amazing.

I can highly recommend it

I love Nick Drake very much. He writes so wonderfully. All his albums are awesome but Pink Moon is my favorite.

TheBig3 05-28-2006 09:42 AM

To me (having not heard very much) he sounds stream-lined, like he doesn't deviate very much from one song to the next. I do like his sound though, however little it changes.

Well a lot of his stuff was recorded with just him acoustically.

If you check out his Bryter Layter album it`s got strings & orchestral arrangements & has a lot more variety in the sound.

EDGE 07-09-2006 03:00 PM

I cant believe I missed this thread.
I love Nick Drake.
Incredible.

tdoc210 07-28-2006 12:48 AM

I'm not surprised he was depressed. His music is enough to depress anyone.

Right Track's better half here - the comment about living Nick Drake at the moment :( His music is especially poignant to me as it reminds me very much of my brother.

Have Pink Moon but will try Bryter, sounds good. Does anyone know any details about the little festival they have for him every year where musicians perform his music in local pubs?

From the morning- last track on Pink Moon is absolutely beautiful. Beck i believe did a cover of Parasite aswell.

...and no, i don't look like Brian Dennehey

I love Pink Moon, but I don't really like Bryter Layter that much. I still have to check out Five Leaves Left.

andy 08-19-2006 08:21 AM

I have Bryter Layter and Pink Moon, BRILLIANT songwriter

Laces Out Dan! 08-31-2006 11:42 PM

Hazey Jane II is my favourite song by this guy...Bryter Layter is an amazing album

Emerald 09-02-2006 09:49 AM

I've only really listened to the Pink Moon album fully, and a few other random tracks that a friend sent me.

Really love Hazey Jane I & II. Great stuff.

Pink Moon 09-27-2006 07:38 PM

I of course love him. A real shame he only put out only three albums they're all beautiful.

The Dave 10-05-2006 08:20 AM

I just checked out this guy, somoene reccomended him to me since I said I liked Elliott Smith. The music is great. I checked out a lot from Pink Moon and am probably ordering that one but i'm definately ordering Five Leaves Left. It's a shame he passed :(.

Folk-loving folk continue plumbing the archives of sorely-missed English singer-songwriter Nick Drake, who was emo before you were even born, kid. This time they've come up with the previously mentioned Family Tree, a 28-track collection that brings together-- for the very first time-- a number of rare Drake cuts recorded prior to his first album, quite a few covers, and a handful of added surprises.

Family Tree takes root in record stores June 19, thanks to the efforts of Tsunami LG/Fontana and Drake's estate manager, one Cally, who produced the compilation. Along with relicts from Mr. Drake's formative years-- culled from old reel-to-reel and cassette recordings-- the set also includes two songs performed by Nick's mother, Molly, and a duet between Nick and sister Gabrielle Drake.

As Gabrielle writes in a "letter" to Nick included with the collection, "I hope that, in the circumstances, you could have given Family Tree your blessing. Or if not, that you could have at least looked on with that wry smile of yours."

A few more things to smile wryly upon: Drake covering Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time", Bert Jansch's "Strolling Down the Highway", Robin Frederick's "Been Smokin' Too Long", Dave Van Ronk's "If You Leave Me", and several tunes by Jackson C. Frank; Nick rocking the clarinet alongside aunt and uncle on Mozart's "Kegelstatt Trio"; a pair of early versions of songs from Drake's first LP, Five Leaves Left; a free, gold-embossed official Nick Drake Fan Club kazoo*.

Check back later in 2007 for your next Drake fix, an expanded edition of the Fruit Tree box set that collects the man's three LPs and a DVD of the documentary A Skin Too Few. Vinyl and CD formats should descend before the end of the year.

Family Tree:

01 Come in to the Garden (Introduction)
02 They're Leaving Me Behind
03 Time Piece
04 Poor Mum [performed by Molly Drake]
05 Winter Is Gone
06 All My Trials [performed by Nick and Gabrielle Drake]
07 Kegelstatt Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano
08 Strolling Down the Highway
09 Paddling in Rushmere
10 Cocaine Blues
11 Blossom
12 Been Smokin' Too Long
13 Black Mountain Blues
14 Tomorrow Is a Long Time
15 If You Leave Me
16 Here Come the Blues

18 Blues Run the Game
19 My Baby So Sweet
20 Milk and Honey
