Sigur Rós... Genre?? Sub genre?

This album makes my whole world taste like daffodil daydream. I need to know what sub genre this is, so I can find specifically similar artists... Thanks in advance!

Sigur Rós: Takk... [full album]

That's the genre you nimrod.

Exo 06-23-2016 01:29 PM

I'm horrible at genres but they're from Iceland. That sound is very popular in Iceland so I would check out other bands from there. Olafur Arnalds is one to check out.

Nimrod was actually brilliant and ruthless; you really need to work on your derisive ad hominem attacks.

And I am aware that "post rock" is a genre, I simply was asking what are the qualifications that place Sigur Rós in that genre, and whether simply searching for other "post rock" artists will actually yield the results I am seeking.

Okay, well in that case I would definitely try, as Exo said, looking for other Icelandic acts. You could also try looking for bands who are considered both post-rock and dream pop, as that's what makes Sigur Ros' sound unique to other post-rock acts, in my opinion at least.

Gotcha. I'm not surprised as I find myself increasingly drawn to Scandinavian culture. They also produce better Americana than we Americans do. And better-looking men lol.

Key 06-23-2016 01:46 PM

Also, listen to their Valtari album. It's the best.

Agreed. One of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard.

Zhanteimi 06-23-2016 03:35 PM

Listen to Ágætis byrjun. It's my favorite Sigur Rós album.

JGuy Grungeman 06-24-2016 08:49 AM

Post-Rock is rock with slower tempos and an emphasis on ambience and atmosphere, using the "wall of sound" aspect notable in shoegaze while taking influence from experimental rock, dream pop and ambient.

If you want recs, try Otta by Solstafir. It's got a very metallic sound.

ChelseaDagger 06-24-2016 11:26 AM

Thanks, everyone, for all the recs.

So far I've listened to Takk..., (), and Valtari. I gotta say, Valtari is my favorite album thus far, but this is an early analysis and my opinions are subject to change after multiple listens. Also considering this music as a befitting background for reading science fiction/fantasy novels. Might enrich the experience for my seven year old :D

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 06-24-2016 11:33 AM

Play some Slayer, you don't want to raise a pussy.

Chula Vista 06-24-2016 12:29 PM

Head over heels in love with this band.

Zhanteimi 06-24-2016 04:29 PM

^This is my favorite Sigur Ros track.

onestepafteranother 06-25-2016 11:02 AM

Brennestein is also a beautiful track.

Listen to Lift Yr. Fists Like Skinny Antenas to Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I guarentee, it is one of the best albums ever and, if you got even a remote amount of enjoyment out of Sigur Ros, you will like it. I cannot emphasize this enough. Listen to this god damn mother****ing album.

This is how you give a rec

Zhanteimi 06-25-2016 03:34 PM

Seeing Sigur Ros at the Budokan in Tokyo a couple years ago was one of the most moving musical experiences of my life. My friend held my hand and told me to "get it together, man!"

I've listened to a few Godspeed albums (including this one). They're just meh for me, the Great Value brand of Sigur Ros. So they got moved to my external HD.

Me, science, Daedchannel, people with excellent taste, fans of heavier crescendos, etc.

Zhanteimi 07-01-2016 06:09 PM

Why are your tastes superior?

And prove your claim using science.

Frownland 07-01-2016 06:11 PM

I make some of the greatest music of the 21st century, so I'm pretty good at spotting quality music.

Zhanteimi 07-01-2016 06:12 PM

I've heard your "music".

Frownland 07-01-2016 06:19 PM

I'm "sure" "you" have.
