Okay, so here's my narrative, which could be just as right, or as wrong, as yours:
Kid misses his bus cos he's late. Doesn't matter why he's late: maybe he slept in, clock didn't go off, forgot the time, or what you said. Makes no difference at all. Not important. He's late. He misses the bus.
He goes to the nearest house to ask directions to the school. This is at least something admirable. He could have just gone home, said he missed the bus, or skipped school entirely. But he wants/has to go to school, so needs to know how to get there by walking.
Inside this house are two jumpy, possibly borderline psychotic racists. Both think that the only good nigger* is a dead nigger. This is borne out by the woman's use of the term "those people". Maybe they've been burgled, maybe they have not. I would not be at all surprised to find that somewhere in that house is a white robe and hood, and white supremacist literature. I would be amazed if they were not Trump voters.
The woman starts screaming the moment she sees the kid - "Nigger! Nigger! Nigger on my doorstep! Help! He's going to murder me!" Husband comes flying down the stairs, sees a dirty coon "menacing" his wife, goes for his gun. It would seem he had every intention of killing the kid, cos you can't really fire a shotgun that accurately, can you? Even if you shoot to wound, likelihood is that you may land a fatal shot, purposely or not.
Overreaction, insanity, deadly force all predicated on a completely racist and bigoted worldview.
Or, it may have happened how you described it. Just an alternate possibility, and the idea that things are not always (sorry) black and white.
* Apologies for the racist language here but I really think this may be what was going through their heads at the time.
