Nobody said this was done by some crazy White Supremacist. Also interesting that one of the news outlets you linked was a Fox Affiliate. Trump will be displeased.

Actually, I would have. No one thought anything of the term until a black city councilman made a big deal about it during the Baltimore riots. Even our black mayor had described the rioters as thugs. Incidentally Walter Cronkite referred to Daley's musclemen (all white) at the Chicago Convention as thugs when they were roughing up Dan Rather. I don't see any racial connotations with the term at all.

This. Well, well, well before black culture appropriated the word and made it theirs ("Thug Life"? Gimme a beak! No, it's not misspelled: I want to be a Hawk too!) we had thugs everywhere. It was, and is, just a collective description of any band of louts or hard men, what we used to call "hard-chaws" or "bowsies" or "hardos". Still is, to me.
