She worked those jobs for a short time and really got an inside look about their lives and how hard they work. A lot of people have to work more than one job to get by, and at the end of the day they're exhausted. Every day. It's grueling and really rather hopeless. A powerful book, that.

Probably so, but the mechanics of how the impoverished are kept in poverty is aptly described. It's validating.
