I do believe that diction can be indicative of a person's own beliefs. It's just when that argument conveniently applies to criticisms levied against you is when I think you're being more weaselly than anything else. It starts looking a hell of a lot more like the former than the latter.

People with abusive parents can be great parents. My dad was physically abused for all of his childhood and he only beat me until he stopped using meth when I was about 8 years old. Talk about gains.
