News headlines today: Nov. 1, 2019

A United States Marine paused during his deployment in Syria to connect with three children standing nearby, a Defense Department photograph released on Thursday shows.

The unidentified Marine, a member of 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, is shown making a heart with his hands, mirroring one of the children standing beyond some barbed wire and brush.

(MORE: US armored vehicles, infantry troops arrive in eastern Syria to guard oil facilities)
The photograph, taken by Sgt. Branden Bourque, was taken at the Kobane Landing Zone, a Marine Corps spokesperson told ABC News.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump directed the withdrawal of about 1,000 U.S. forces from northeastern Syria in an attempt to end what he described as an "endless war." The airstrip is where U.S. troops have gathered to exit Syria in the northwestern part of the country.
However, as many as 700 U.S. troops will remain in the country in two locations: in the south at the At Tanf Garrison and in the east near Deir ez Zor to guard oil facilities from falling into the hands of ISIS.

The unit the Marine belongs to in the heartwarming photograph is part of the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force – Crisis Response – Central Command (SPMAGTF-CR-CC), a rotational force in the Middle East that can be deployed on short notice to provide security.

The U.S. has had presence a presence in Syria since 2015, working with America's Kurdish allies to defeat the Islamic State.

ABC's Elizabeth McLaughlin and Luis Martinez contributed to this report from the Pentagon.

That's pretty gross. We're there to defend oil but here's heartwarming propaganda to distract you.

Eh we're there just as much to wage a proxy war on Russia and weaken ISIS

Oil definitely matters but I think a lot of people over estimate how straight forward these wars are

We have a vested interest in pursuing strategies that empower our geopolitical interests in every relevant region in the world

And forn ask the talk about no blood for oil during Iraq and Afghanistan, we've done very little to improve our access to foreign oil. If anything we just doubled down on drilling and fracking at home to make up the difference.

Since 9/11, U.S.-led forces have killed—directly, not indirectly--more than a thousand children in Syria and other war zones around the world.

Sure sure but it's still disgusting to be like hey look at this Marine making friends with these locals. People talk about left wing and right wing media but Chomsky's right. All American news is pro-American.

jwb 11-01-2019 06:47 PM

Yea they have that bias.. but we're still more self conscious than most countries are.. and definitely more than was normal ~70 years ago when we were burning entire cities to the ground with out a hint of remorse

Chomsky is right about America... But he ignores most of the rest of the world and pretends that because we're the most powerful we're just uniquely evil

It doesn’t mean the regular citizens get access to the oil supply to lower prices. It just means that rich ass people from wherever are going to continue hoarding the wealth selling that oil wherever. Any threat to the current power structure that would put any of the wealth attained from energy exports incites violent American military intervention. ****ing ISIS and Al Qaida my ass. All they are is a threat to control energy wealth. ****ing 9/11 and we invade Iraq. That’s like invading Indonesia after Pearl Harbor. It’s about selling the war machine and oil and keeping the super elite unchallenged. The rest is bull**** propaganda. Be for ****ing real. There’s not a drop of sincerity or concern for humanity in our foreign policy.

... I didn't say it was about humanity, lol. Our geopolitical interests go beyond oil. There is no oil in Afghanistan.
