California's Senate passes sanctuary state bill - CNNPolitics.com

This is a terrible move. While the intentions behind this is great in that it keeps people safe who wouldn't go to the police out of fear of deportation, it swings too far in the wrong direction by wasting tax money on imprisoning violent felons instead of deporting them.

Doctors.
Police.
And since 9/11, Airline employees.

Take the cash and free hotel room rather than trying to "win" in that situation.

So then youre perfectly fine with someone being grabbed and dragged off of a plane because they paid for their seat and wouldn't move? Also police don't deserve respect. They have to earn it like the rest of us. I won't openly be a dick to them but I also don't feel like I should be forced to respect someone because of their uniform.

Your default state should be respectful, to everyone, until someone abuses your respect or trust.

To do otherwise makes you the dick you're trying not to be.

It's my understanding the states are not supposed to set immigration policy. So wouldn't using state resources to enforce federal law be a similar breach of federalism?

Respect goes both ways though. The airline should have respected the fact that this guy chose to fly their ****ty airline (don't they always say "We know you have a choice"?) instead of calling the cops. ****s.

I agree but the uniform doesn't earn the respect. If you wear a uniform and you're a dick, you don't deserve respect. Thats the point I'm making.

Well, sure. My point is that there's moments in life where you end up at a fork in the road - often times not of your own doing. You have two choices.

As soon as the airline called in security it was time for the doctor to comply and live to fight another day with rightful cause. By choosing to continue to be indignant he made things worse and will probably end up with charges filed against him - in the modern era you don't **** with airlines or airline personal.

Was he wronged? Of course. Did he end up making matters much worse because of choosing the wrong way to respond? 100%.

Choose your battles wisely.

Yes. Yes it does. Until the person wearing the uniform does something that's illegal or dickish they've earned your respect. You go into an encounter with the police assuming the best - not the worst. 99 times out of 100 you'll walk away free and clear if you've done nothing wrong.

And ya, life isn't fair 100% of the time, every time. Just go into a situation with the law assuming it is. Not with a premeditated chip on your shoulder.

I completely disagree. I'm not saying I'll judge somebody right away, but I'm not obligated to respect anybody if i dont feel they deserve it. Of course I wont be a dick either. Respect is a silent trait that you can personally hold someone accountable for. I know you're wanting to play the age card and you'll tell me to respect my elders, but you have to earn it. Uniform doesn't mean anything. I wear a uniform at work but I don't automatically expect everyone to treat me with respect. Especially if I am being a dick to said person.

No, but I will tell you to grow the **** up. Do you respect firemen? They choose a job that entails them putting themselves at risk in order to possibly save your skinny butt. Sames goes for the police.

Are you seriously trying to equate the ****ing uniform that you wear as being equal to cops and firemen?

No. You're just missing the disconnection between uniforms and respect. Believe me, I won't go out of my way to disrespect a fireman or cop, but I shouldn't be forced to respect them for, as you put, choosing a job that puts them at risk. Sorry, but if they weren't forced to be a cop or a fireman, and they weren't forced to risk their lives, I shouldn't feel forced to respect them. I do respect them, obviously. I'm not that soulless. But I'm going to respect them based on what I see out of their character.
