They weren't "our" people, they were people who declared themselves citizens of a foreign nation and waged war against the United States. The only way in which the McVeigh comparison isn't accurate is scale, the Confederacy was far worse. No idea if it's "constructive" or not, but it's the reality of what happened. I don't see any point in glorifying it.

**** the Union and the Confederacy and every piece of **** that died in that stupid ****ing war. Most people in the north were only against slavery because they were repulsed by the idea of Africans living in America. Most northerners thought the best solution was to simply kill all the blacks and wash their hands of it. And honor the confederacy? Really? **** those ****s. I piss on their ****ing graves.

Let's remember that the Civil War, at its core, was about those southern states wanting to keep their slaves (to stay very rich) and ignoring the basic tenants of the United States Constitution:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

So the leaders of the southern movement were a bunch of rich white men who didn't want to give up their free labor, and who convinced thousands and thousand of young men through BS propaganda (sound familiar?) that it was some sort of noble cause that made killing other Americans justified.

Lee, at various points during his military career, instructed his troops to capture any free blacks they came across and to return them to the south so they could be enslaved again.

When you have some time give this a read. Again, sound familiar?

A lot of Republicans were against slavery on moral grounds straight up

A significant portion of the party would continue to push for African American rights after the war too, even reparations
