The Fermi Paradox leads me to conclude that every species that discovers a way to destroy itself quickly does so. I believe it's an unavoidable evolutionary outcome evidenced by the lack of evidence of alien intelligence. So to answer elph's question. Yes, I think it's biological. An unavoidable universal flaw. Other answers don't pan out.

I won't get into a [MERIT]-style argument with you over aliens, but I think there's plenty of evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence so I'm not sure where you get that from. Either way, what about aliens who evolve beyond physical bodies into a higher state of being? Surely they, if they exist, would not destroy each other?

Drake and Fermi were mainstream scientists and Fermi won the Nobel Prize. If you don't read on it you won't get what I'm saying. I don't care if you choose to dismiss me but there's reason to conclude there's a reason we see no proof of extraterrestrial life.
