They made a big deal about black history month in my elementary school and I learned a lot about black historical figures and slavery that I wouldn't have known because they wouldn't have covered it with such depth, I think black history month is a good thing.

Just an idea? :P
The problem is that we're going to get stuff like "why does my history month come up after the Native American History month!!" or "why does my history month come up during the coldest part of the year!!!" and "Why do the Aussies get Deceber!! I want December!!"

I agree that it may just be best to get rid of history months all together. No special events like that.

Man...this thread got more replies then I expected.

But what about all of the other cultes/groups out there. Surely they deserve the same attention. I am not saying that black history isn't important, just not important enough to be the only race getting their month. No race is that special.

You people are completely missing the point of black history month. It isn't to set any one race on a pedestal to make them feel equal, it's to end racism towards them through knowledge. I'm pretty sure Australians haven't been experiencing much racism lately.

It's not like it's black people get free ice cream month. All it means is that there's some cheesy stuff on tv about it and sometimes people read stuff over the intercom at school. So, who even cares?

And if you got rid of the month, it'd be easier to raise little kids without them thinking and learning about racism.

... and if their parents are racist? Without the month, there's no force fighting back in the kids' minds. Racism can never, and should never, be forgotten.

Parents have nothing to do with how a kid sees other people.

My father has always been kind of racist.
I'm in no way, shape, or form like him, in that way.

Well, you're not as impressionable as some people, as in the people stupid enough to be racists.

No offense to your father, kind of :\

Racism is innate. It's just a matter of how you deal with it. Do you give everyone a chance and judge them on their character or pigeonhole people into nice and tidy generalizations.
