In over 60 years of TV the networks have found they can influence viewers likelihood of spending by the programs they show. Typically involving glorifying those who "have" and demonising those who "have not". The typical format is using "goodies" who we aspire to, and "baddies" who are evil and ultimately face a humiliated death or defeat. But there are many tools besides that in force which are used to maximise the likelihood of the viewer spending money. This "spending state of mind" if you like helps TV achieve its goal- Not to entertain but to sell.
This doesn't relate to all TV programs but to almost all prime time viewing. Most viewers are so ingrained in the TV state of mind they don't even know it. It really is sick. But that is the way it is. They want a dumb public who gauge success by what they have, and they must have it now, to set up an endless round of spending.
Twenty years ago TV there were TV shows excluding most US ones that wewre actually quite good value, but the selling psychology these days woven into programs is seen as far more important than good value for the viewers. They don't want to be of value for us, they want value for them! Our money.
Prime time programs are actually infomercials disguised as drama, sci-fi, gameshows, and the news, designed to make you work, spend, and be a good little consumer. You don't think the powers that be would ignore the biggest money grabbing medium available do you?

I only have one channel now, due to the DTV voodoo going on, so now I just watch Jeopardy. Besides the fact that I think Alex Trebec is a pompous arrogant know-it-all, I like that show and watch it regularly. I don't think it rots your brain by any means.

But on the other hand, Two and a Half Men is another show on that channel and it is pure smut.

How could anyone get that impression from Alex Trebec?

I would say that jeopardy is not a big deal. Alex Tribeck is just a dude, he knows a lot of crap since he has been the host for 20+ years lol..

The thing is without media we would have no idea what was going on outside of our own neighbor hoods.. My question to all of you is would that be such a bad thing?

I could see where you may not be aware of certain things, outbreaks, nuclear fallout.. Either way what you dont know can't hurtcha... I think that without it we would be happier ppl... Either way it has been so ingrained into all of us to know the latest and greatest on whatever... Lets take for instance the swine flu... What would have happened if you didnt know? Nothing more than likely and your worries would have been focused on the real problem, the economy. Which by the way is probably just another way to take your attention off something else that your not supposed to know about. Who cares really, pay your bills dont live beyond your means and you have nothing to worry about. So there you go with the media.

I will say that without it there are plenty of negitives as well.. Like me not being able to tell you how horrible everything is via music banter...
