This changes on a state to state basis, but in Iowa the charge for killing an animal is aggravated misdemeanor the first time and a class D felony the second time. The most time you can spend in prison for killing an animal is 5 years here. Depending on the type of kill the least you can get for killing a person is a class B felony which has a minimum sentence of 10 years.

My fault the story i read the people kileld a dog while commiting a robbery. They got 20 years
