Correct. Advancements happen in one of three ways:

1) Trial and Error (Chemistry)
2) Accidentally (X-ray technology)
3) Technology catches up to human intelligence (Nanotechnology)

I'm just not understanding how you think we can deliberately create something more intelligent than ourselves. That's like inventing a magic 8-ball that actually works. Can you give even one real world example of what you're claiming?

We use technology to create things to help us better understand and influence our surroundings in order to create new things to help us better understand and influence our surroundings... and on and on and on.

i'm having a hard time understanding the dilemma here

you say that a process of trial and error which is based on probability/non-random selection + random genetic mutation can create a tool for intelligence

but an intelligent agent using the process of trial and error in a similar though much more rapid and guided way is impossible?

it's like you're saying that intelligence is magic or something

it's not. it's just engineering. as for a 'real world example', do you mean an example of a less intelligent agent designing more intelligent agent, or do you specifically mean humans creating something smarter than humans which obviously hasn't happened yet. that's what i'm saying is going to happen.

if you care enough, check out this lecture. this is where i get these ideas from.

Except when their apparent lack of understanding of how the economy functions in the long term caused them to go bankrupt.

John Wilkes Booth 04-14-2015 03:50 PM

is it lack of understanding or is it the fact that everyone is self interested and not as concerned with the overall well being of the economy so long as they turn out alright

i mean who really took the hit when the economy crashed?

No, I just don't understand how an intelligent machine can be designed in such a way that it surpasses our own knowledge. I agree it may be more efficient, I even said that about the calculator. Maybe the video will help clear things up, I watched the first 15 minutes of the video don't have time to watch it all now.

I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt. I hope the economic masterminds of the world truly understand the system they are dealing with but decided to be selfish assholes.

On a side note, this is a great movie to see how some of this goes down behind the scenes.

This scene was chilling. The dude just ruined millions of people's lives and he casually enjoys his meal.

So, they knew that the entire system they had exploited to make them ****loads of money would come crashing down, leaving them at the mercy of the government to bailout? Which they only did once Lehman Brothers went belly up. That's not selfish and short sighted, that's just not having any idea how to interpret the long term actions of such an infinitely complex system.

Key words, "like" and "hope". Two words not based in logic. Face it. The people who run this world are holding on by their fingertips the same as everyone else.

i mean i'm not saying they intentionally crashed the economy

i just think they were more focused on making money for themselves than for insuring long term economic stability.
