Pounds and pounds of marijuana come out of Humboldt County California every day.
No one is stopping it. Demand is the reason. The governemnt wants a piece, and that is the whole story. The original letter that started this movement from the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors to the Governor of California explicitly states this outright. ~~~"There is a multi-billion dollar industry going on all around us. The governement is broke. We need to legalize and tax it." So lets not get greedy and jump on the first weed law that comes our way. No, you can't absolutely control the growth and flow, and licensure of weed. If its OK to legalize it, lets do it in a way thats good for the people, not some jack ass and his cronies. I'll wait for a bill that doesn't give someone 5 years in prison for smoking a joint on their own back patio in an apartment complex where someone under 21 years old lives in another apartment. The taxation opportunity for the government is undeniable. Ok, let them have theirs. But lets not **** the people in the ass to do it.

You seem to completely detach the government from the people, but you live in a democracy. Doesn't money to the government mean more money to the people, possibly in the shape of better public schools and roads? That's how we'd see it over here at least.

While certainly the money raised will help with costs of running the government and providing for the people, there are two concerns. 1- It will not be done in a way that has "the peoples" best interest in mind with this specific law 2- In the US we are very jaded about what the governement does with our taxes. There is no doubt they do the minumum to keep up roads and other public services. They sure do find a way to take expensive trips to Hawai'i and fancy dinners, and helicopter rides, etc. This money won't go to keep music and arts in schools. It won't go to make my vehicle registration cheaper. I recently incorporated a business in California. It was supposed to take one month, but took 2 1/2 monthes because California is broke, and the workers at the office that does that are on forced furloughs 3 fridays a month ( off work and no pay ) plusother people that have been let go. They will say they need the money for this, tax marijuana, but it will still take 2 1/2 months. Its the same old story here. Taxation without representation. I want to know who is running on the accountability party?

To be clear, "legalizing" it under current proposals doesn't mean everyone could just grow their own.
You could grow a small amount yourself, but any amount meant to be sold requires a license that the government subjectively decides who gets one. Just like alocohol. Who can get a license to produce alcohol in the US? It is very difficult. Also, it entails very strict punishments for transporting it (If you grow your own, how are you going to take it anywhere?), or having it near people less than 18 or 21 years old, sometimes in a way you can't control. If you live in an apartment and have a small amount for personal use, which is legal, how can you control if there is a minor in another apartment in your building that has nothing to do with you? And if this penalty is 5 years in prison, what the ****?

I will be for legalization when they write the bills a little differently.
There is no doubt it is everywhere around here. People smoke it in front of the bar facing the srteet around here. Its not like there's some big secret. They have pictures and logos of it on their hats, shirts, and jackets. Weed is part of the culture in a lot of California.

But pot is highly legal in California, and from what I've seen, Oregon is lenient. For 100 dollars and a two hour wait, I was able to get my medical card and go to the dispensaries (there are TONS, in just about every city and even small towns usually have one) as well as grow up to 6 plants. Plus, around that time, Obama's stance on it was hands-off as long as we're going by state laws. But he reversed that position and got all draconian again. Haven't really seen the effect of that because I didn't grow in the 2011 season. But I plan on doing it this April-October and hoping for the best. I'm down for legalization, but I hope to get one more successful grow in before the market is flooded with cheap weed. I have a feeling that well grown bud will still command a decent price and a following, but folks are going to have to keep ties with their old connects and not go down to the government bud store to make sure they don't get skunked. It's great to go to bars in California that are chill enough to let us smoke weed on the back patio with the cig. smokers. I miss that immensely. Nothing like not having to sneak out and around the block. Can sit and drink and smoke at the same time. Beautiful. |
