Wow, that is really interesting... would be great to read about. All this stuff sounds amazing in theory but to be honest it sounds so far-fetched! Although I must admit that I have very little knowledge when it comes to science and have a hard time understand how these things would work. Interesting, though.

Some of the articles put out by NASA scientists are rough, hypothesized solutions to problems we can't really fix or do at the moment. For example putting giant orbiting mirrors around Mars and concentrate the sun on it's poles to warm it up and release carbondioxide into it's thin atmosphere. They sometimes say something like "we estimate this technology to be available in year 2XXX" so there's much thinking ahead. :)

the issue of course being that unless the elevator is somehow able to allow matter to pass through it, the debris surrounding the Earth would likely destroy any "elevator" relatively quickly.

In this scenario, we're talking about bombing the moon... but obviously the spending plan as a whole needs an overhaul to accommodate the current situation.

This is the issue? I'm sure we could come up with quite a lot of practical problems regarding this space-elevator if we wanted, but I'm gonna leave the thinking to the people working with the project.

Okay, I understand. I think money to science is important but I also do understand that doing science is a kind of luxury in a nation because it's money spent on something that usually doesn't directly benefit the people.
