Is it just me, or does heaven sound like a really horrible place?

To the original poster - where in the world are you getting this stuff? Definitely not from the Bible.

....in the case of heaven I don't see it as much different than nirvana(or whatever the buddists call it)...the removal of all earthly desires, complete relaxation, etc.

If that means feeling happy for all eternity it's pretty much irrelevant what it looks like on paper....my only problem with heaven and hell is that I can't picture myself in it and the whole balance between pain and joy is what makes us human in the first place. In the case of hell...the only thing that causes that much personal suffering is the hope for something better and that hope both sustains a person and causes them to suffer in the first place, which is not much different than earth.

By the way, thanks for the description Unfan. It's nowhere as elaborate as the one for heaven, but it sounds like heaven and hell are separated by a great gulf and that hell is a warm or cave pit where people burn. The gnashing of teeth part was a bit weird, but the rest wasn't surprising.

C'mon, everyone knows the "there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth" part.

Preachers love that line, it's probably the most used bible quote that I can think of.

Yes, I've certainly heard it before. Still a weird detail to include.

I realize I probably know more about the underworlds of Dungeons & Dragons than I know of the biblical one though.

The weird part about it is I, for some reason, can't understand why my "soul" would have, or need, teeth in which to gnash.. Am I supposed to be eating things in the after life to keep my nutrition levels up and providing fuel for my... 'ahem'... biological requirements?
