i don't think there is any clear consensus on how, actually, consciousness works.

Well, not really in a documented history book kind of way...

But the hilarious thing about consciousness and perspective without a defining reason is that even Wikepedia serves as a proper faith for most.
If it works for so many, why be bothered trying to insert your own philosophy into the picture? Cue scene religion.
If there's no answer, you might as well pull one from your ass in the mean-time.
