Again, 300 million people. Whether it's actually under reported doesn't necessarily mean that it's a runaway crisis that shows that our police forces are seriously in need of reform.

Edit: I'm also not sure I'm following your line of thinking in regard to police brutality in America vs other countries. What do the comparative rates have to do with anything if people are being senselessly abused and/or murdered? Surely it doesn't make it any less terrifying just because it happens elsewhere.
Well there's a certain allowable percentage of bug parts in food or defects in manufactured products, not because bugs in our food is okay, but because there's just gonna be bugs in our food no matter what we do. The thing is to make sure it's at a manageable level. Police are going to abuse their authority no matter how much we crack down, but if it's not at whatever level we might deem "out of control" then it should be treated in perspective rather than as a crisis. It's kind of a hard thing to quantify, so comparing rates of police brutality in this country with that of others makes sense to me.

The problem with this line of thinking is that you have just as little to say as the person you're claiming an advantage over.

How about either of you provide any kind of figures or actual rationale as to why police brutality is at or not at a higher level than would be reasonable to expect given population and social constraints?

FWIW, I expect that police brutality and racism is a significant issue primarily in highly urbanised areas, and that national statistics will be of very little use. I expect figures in cities like Detroit and New York to be astonishingly high and incidences of unjust police treatment to be evident in daily life, not as isolated incidences.

I posit also that this will be heavily influenced by america's problems re: social equality. The poorest neighborhoods in urban america are overwhelmingly black, and also have the lowest literacy and highest crime rates, because those neighborhoods are where the poor are forced to exist, rather than having options to live elsewhere, and because urban racism keeps ethnic minorities poor while offering greater opportunity to white people.

I'm not arguing against your point, I'm just arguing against the knee jerk alarmism that I keep seeing, and for the same in-depth research you're talking about before we start spending our limited resources to combat the problem.

Also **** those cops from Ohio that killed the guy in Walmart over a toy gun. He said it isn't real then they shoot him and said get on the ground after they put him on the ground from shooting at him. Grade A cop work. Open carry white people don't get shot immediately when they have real weapons. Black lives obviously don't matter.
That is bloody terrible. When are these cops going to take resonsibility for poor/deadly actions? They continue to work and the station in the same roles after murdering citizens for no valid reason. When will it stop? The people running the station always support the officer in question no matter what the cop has offended people by.

@ Dj, on the subject of Mr Toy Gun.

Black lives dont matter. You on dat dope aint cha?

Do you think the cops would have blasted him if he surrendered his mock weapon? I don't think so,with the advent of cell phones and YouTube you can belive at least six wanna be Dan Rathers were poised and waiting for the cops to pop off.. Also I'm willing to bet they told him drop his weapon more then once, and I'm sure they said it above a whisper. The simple fact of the matter is dicks with guns get blasted. And as far as this particular isolated incident is concerned the cops had a clean justifed shooting, in order to save innocent civilian lives bro. They didn't know the weapon was fake and part of being a sworn officer is if you feel that the lives of others are in iminate immediate danger they are authorized to use leathal force. Don't matter what color the person is. Put your Al Sharpton wig down on this brother and lay off dat dope.

As far as the unarmed black kid goes, in MO thats a homicide. Point blank period. And quite frankly "our community" needs to learn the difference between the two.

I don't know why you are immediately taking the cops side on this one. You are making assumptions. White dicks with guns don't get blasted. When they go around with real rifles claiming they are exercising their amendment rights in an open carry state. So I don't want to hear that crap. Something definitely shady went on with this shooting, it wasn't a clean shooting at all whatsoever. If it was they would have released the video to the family already.

It actually is an open carry state. How many white guys do you see get blasted for open carrying their rifles?

****ing Zero!

He was walking around a Wal-Mart carrying a toy gun and talking on his cell phone, which apparently "alarmed" other customers.

Any way you spin it it's racism at play. There's just no way we would be left with the same result had he been white.

Yeah he shouldn't of have been talking on his cell phone, I hate when people do that in stores also.
