It becomes a problem when your country is in as much debt as America.

The recession really took a turn for the worse just before his inauguration as pres, so I guess that makes sense?

You're right, I could save so much money if I stopped feeding my cat.

You might be able to solve the issue if people weren't trying to turn America into a tax haven.

There's nothing wrong with increased government funding, when the government can afford it.

This is another argument that really frosts my pumpkin.

So we repeal all the regulatory acts that prevent the nation from going over a cliff, the nation goes over a cliff, seeing as the institutions that pushed it over the cliff employ a lot of people the tax payers give you a bail out, they use that bailout to pay stupid people bonuses. Meanwhile, in Afghanistan we're fighting an intractable war, sending drones global, and maintain bases in Saudi Arabia, Germany, Korea, and Japan which only adds to the debt.

And our solution to eliminating the debt is not to tell the top 1% to pay the same rate I do, and that your parents and neighbors do, but to tell me, and your parents, and your neighbors that they won't get the same level of benefits they've been getting for years, expected to get for years, and will still pay the same rate for that we're going to cut those benefits.

Thats absolute madness. The working people in this country are its core, we're essentially working to create a new level of institutionalized slavery, where the folks at the top make the most, do the least, and contribute nothing while those working into their 70's get squat.

If you believe that, I don't know what I can do for you. I'm an old school Democrat in my soul. I'm not a member of the party, but I believe in the equality of opportunity. Right now, that doesn't exist in this country. To steal a line from Bill Mahr, America, right now, ranks 10th in the American dream.

It depends on what the funding is going towards. Increasing funding to the war on drugs (mainly marijuana) would be a bad thing. Increasing military spending would be a bad thing. We need to cut our military spending overseas. If we are really serious about balancing the budget and addressing our unsustainable debt, nothing can be off the table.

Quote:

America’s wealthiest households contribute a larger share to government than in any other OECD country, at 45%. Looking just at income tax, the share paid by the top 1% of earners in America rose from 28% in 1988 to 40% in 2006, in Britain it rose from 21% in 1999 to 28% this year.
The underlined is mine; and, pardon me, but when 1% of the populace pays two-fifths of the income tax... they are doing their part.

Here's another fun statistic:

Quote:

[I]n 2009, according to a memo from the Joint Committee on Taxation, a bi-partisan Congressional committee, only 49 percent of Americans owed money on their Federal income tax returns [source: PolitiFact]. So yes, it's true that more than half of all Americans paid no Federal income tax in the tax year 2009, and the number of people who did pay taxes was even lower -- 51 percent, not 53 percent. For tax year 2011, the non-partisan Tax Policy Center estimates that only 54 percent of Americans will pay Federal income tax.
LINK

So, 1% of the populace pays 40% of the federal income tax, and 49% of the populace pays nothing! Hurrah for tax deductions for being old, having kids, etc....
