Time has had Hitler on its cover. I think it gets away with it, because it's meant to be an informative, current events magazine, whereas Rolling Stone is known pop-culture and rockstars. Different contexts for similar photos.

Exactly, and he wasn't depicted in a sexualized capacity.

This was a well-written and valid rebuttal.

This was not:

Comparing and contrasting mass murderers on magazine covers is not off topic. Your backseat moderating/self-preservation is.

I think my statement was a bit more esoteric than this. The kind of audio terrorism that's going on here is extremely popular in the states.

Anyway, as to the bomber dude on the cover of RS, I can see where people are coming from in terms of how it might be interpreted as glorification to the impressionable. At the same time, however, RS has traditionally always had a political involvement in their mag. But part of me wonders what's so political about this particular case that brought them to the decision to put him on the cover.
I wondered that until I actually read what they wrote on it.

"How a popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam, and became a monster".

As though this "angel" wasn't accountable for his actions and we can shift the blame onto something else since it's his family that f*cked him up. Score one for the impressionable kids.
Again, I didn't read the article so take what I say at face value. It's just my first impression.

free dali that bolded part you commented on is a good point. i think a huge problem in society is accountability. i try to teach kids all the time to be accountable but everyone tries to blame others. its a big step from being taught or even told to do something and then actualyl doing it.

i agree that i am not sure really what political discussion the guy on the cover opens up

Yeah, but Time is more of a reputable magazine so they can do whatever the **** they want.

I'd rather have Obama then that Harper idiot we have here.

Exactly. Time has also had Stalin, Nixon and Ayatollah Khomeini on their cover as Person of the Year as well. It's not the Awesome Guy of the the Year, it's a reflection of people they feel were very significant during that time, in one way or another. And as you say, it's a news magazine, of course it's going to have political figures on its cover. Rolling Stone is a music magazine. I think they were just trying to court controversy with this to sell more issues.
